The problem with cool quotes is that people actually incorporate them into their beliefs without examining them. How can a hypocrite keep anyone from God who is saved? They cannot. Christians are in relationship with God.
So, let's look at where hypocrisy enters into a church. I have attended and left a church where the pastor was having an affair with another man's wife in the congregation. I did not want to be associate with that church. There were far better to choose from. Most of the congregation left, and a new, stronger church was formed under better leadership.
A church, as you say, should function to help people. Some do, some just turn a blind eye to blatant immorality. How does this help heal people? You cannot treat a condition and heal it if you ignore it.
So what does the original saying convey?
1)That a Christian is separated from God if they do not attend church. A Christian cannot be separated from God--that Christian has formed a bond with God from the moment of salvation.
2)Members of the body of Christ should turn a blind eye toward self-destructive behaviors and behaviors which harm the reputation of the church. This is not the model Paul gave us for the church assembly. They should be approached, the problem should be dealt with, and if they refuse to deal with that, then they should be put out of membership. Paul says it a little more strongly--hand them over to Satan. But it is all the same.
