My Dog, My Guru

Lost Comet

My dog loves people. She will stop in the middle of intense play to greet someone; no one is a stranger. I’ve met a half dozen people by routinely taking her on the same walk I’ve taken for years. Incredibly gentle, she will run up to children as fast as she can and drop on her side for a belly-rub; she has never jumped on a child, let alone knocked one down in her enthusiasm to say “hi.” She is incredibly patient with my grandchildren, but will play rough enough with me to bruise my arms. People in the neighborhood have grown accustomed to see her pulling me on my bike, what I call a “suicide run.”

She has taught me more in a single year than all my years in school.
