Cardiologist in Studio about Hearts and a Home Test Kit

This is the show from Wednesday, August 15th, 2012.

SUMMARY:

* A Doctor Talks to Bob about the #1 Killer of U.S. Adults: Heart attacks are the main cause of death of American adults. So Enyart is interested in Novamed, an Israeli life sciences company, which manufactures SensAheart, a heart attack home detection kit. While a false-alarm heart attack resulted in Bob Enyart finding out that he had less-than optimal health insurance, a local cardiologist has mixed feelings about a home test out of concern, understandably, that the patient might lose life-saving minutes when he should be on his way to the emergency room. Dr. Juan Weksler of Avista Hospital in the north Denver suburb of Louisville, Colorado has also treated a longtime friend of BEL's, Leon G., who now is the proud owner of seven stents, including one that is a double, shaped like a Y, called a culotte stent. Bob and the doc also discussed changing life expectancy in America, the risk factors for heart attack, how America is struggling with prosperity, and some interesting heart development and anatomy details, including that your heart, given the opportunity, really wants to do nothing but beat, beat, beat!

* Related Story: After today's program, the BEL office manager Al Sharin noticed that the Avista Adventist Hospital has a very encouraging mission statement. "We extend the healing ministry of Christ by caring for those who are ill and by nurturing the health of the people in our communities."

* Unrelated Story: Keep up to date on the stunning paleontology discoveries listed at our DinosaurSoftTissue.com page where you will find the web's most complete catalog of peer-reviewed dinosaur soft-tissue papers along with links and excerpts. As a preview, here are some photos from a T. rex:

* "65-million" Year Old T. rex Soft Tissue: North Carolina State University discovered original biological tissue from a supposedly 65-million year old Tyrannosaurus Rex thighbone, with transparent and pliable blood vessels containing red blood cells. See these photos at Smithsonian Magazine and at MS-NBC, and then see a 2007 Nat'l Geographic report, a 2009 Nat'l Geo. confirmation, and the Hell Creek Formation excavation site worked by famed paleontologist Jack Horner of Montana State University. In 2011 ten leading universities and institutes including Harvard, the University of Manchester, and the University of Pennsylvania published in PLoS One, a peer-reviewed journal, that they have verified that presumed dinosaur material is indeed original biological tissue from a dinosaur! Combined with the research on Egyptian mummies that established 10,000 years as an upper limit for how long such biological molecules could survive, this is another reason why creationists refer to dinosaurs as missionary lizards. Interestingly, the renowned evolutionist PZ Myers recently mocked our Real Science Friday radio show by repeating the now widely-discredited secular hope that the "soft-tissue" dinosaur finds were "biofilm" contamination from bacteria. But as 60 Minutes shows and Bob Enyart sums it up, "This is dinosaur."

* Coming on Friday: http://KGOV.com/list#honeybees On this week's Real Science Friday program, Bob will interview Dr. Carl Werner who graduated summa *** laude from the University of Missouri with distinction in biology and who produced the beautiful Evolution: Grand Experiment DVD series!

Today's Resource: Have you browsed through our Science Department in the KGOV Store? If you found this special RSF page interesting, then Bob Enyart and Fred Williams recommend for you the fascinating videos by Dr. Carl Werner titled Living Fossils and its prequel Evolution, the Grand Experiment!
