Rom 3:20

Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

The word law here in the original is without the article and so can be understood as:

any system of religious thinking (theology),

So it may denote in addition to the mosaic law of commandments, anything in a mandatory or commanding. or conditional overture wherein if complied to theres favor, blessing and acceptance with God !

A person had to be in the covenant with God.

The only way to be in a covenant with God was to do the purification works of the law which used to justify.

Exactly Brother, and that would include for example, the religious thinking that any person, by exercising his own faith, can make himself justified before God.

However, that would fall into the category of works / deeds of the law.

Eph. 2:8-9

8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

9 Not of works [ergon], lest any man should boast.

G2041: ergon

1. business, employment, that which any one is occupied

a. that which one undertakes to do, enterprise, undertaking

2. any product whatever, any thing accomplished by hand, art, industry, or mind

an act, deed, thing done: the idea of working is emphasized in opp. to that which is less than work

The law makes me aware of my sin. I am only saved through the sacrifice of my Lord Jesus Christ.

Simply put when it comes to Justification before God, if the sinner looks to anything in himself to perform such as his believing, repenting, praying, obeying or some other deed, and upon this doing he is Justified before God, then that constitutes being justified by the deeds of the law.

So true Brother, even some religious Calvinists today, maintain that those for whom Christ died aren't justified by Christ's Blood until they perform the act of believing, but that constitutes an act of man; the performance of a deed of the law.

The definite article is not necessary. The context is what makes the meaning clear.

You don't get to make up the bible as you go and you aren't better at translating ancient Greek than those who published your Enlgish bible - regardless of which one you're using.

Exactly, the calvinist is in grave error on that point !

Sure we have faith and repentance but they are gifts from God and not conditions the natural man perform to find acceptance with God. Thats law keeping !

Based on what you say, one might think that God hadn't predestined them to believe that!

Exactly, the calvinist is in grave error on that point !

If so, could they correct the error? If so, how? Can the thoughts, beliefs and actions of men that God Himself not only predestined but is actively forcing to occur, be undone?

Greetings beloved57,
Simply put when it comes to Justification before God, if the sinner looks to anything in himself to perform such as his believing, repenting, praying, obeying or some other deed, and upon this doing he is Justified before God, then that constitutes being justified by the deeds of the law.
Justification comes when a person affectionately believes the Gospel concerning the Kingdom of God and the Name of Jesus Christ, and when he thus believes he is motivated by faith to identify with the death and resurrection of Jesus by baptism Acts 8:5-6,12 and the love of Christ motivates him to participate in the crucified / resurrected way of life in Christ our Lord and yoke-fellow Galatians 2:20, Matthew 11:25-30 and we will thus learn to walk in faith and trust. You are confusing "the works of the Law", or even "works of law" with "the obedience of faith" or "obedience to the faith" Romans 1:1-5, 16:26.

Kind regards
Trevor

Indeed ! Plus the natural man's faith and repentance cannot please God:

Rom. 8:7-8

7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

As believers in Christ, we became so by Grace, prior to and because of Christs death, we were Justified by Christ Blood and Righteousness; this is why there's nothing for a believer to boast about. Yes obeying plays a part, but not when it comes to a person being saved or Justified before God, this Justification before God is solely based on the Obedience and Grace of another Rom 5:19 ;3:24, then our obedience comes afterwards, because of Grace.
