Here's a hint: protests have a permit that specify a single person or organization that accepts responsibility for the behavior of the participants. They are motivated to stay orderly.
Riots lack a permit, they lack a single person or organization, nobody accepts responsibility. Which means that when they become disorderly everybody participating is held responsible.
