Capital W "word" is a interpretation, since the original Greek didn't have capitals. I like the KJV, but there are other good translations, some better than others.

What he's trying to say is that Jesus was the name given to the man-child born of Mary. We don't know if His name was Jesus before that.

Here's what I found out. When there are two nominative nouns with a helping verb (I prefer "reflexive"), the one with the article is the predicate nominative. In the case of John 1:1, "The fact that "word" is articular while "God" is anarthrous makes it clear that John is telling us something...
