The Law: Religion and the State

I understand that the religion forum here is not necessarily about government. Being a Citizen of the United States of America, I am interested in the role of the state in enforcing the law, as opposed to the church. Does a child face the church or the state or just parents if he has done something wrong? How is the law enforced? The church is a beacon of grace. How do we experience all of the things that are good in life?

What is the relationship of or between religion and government or religion and the state? When does who step in for what? How is everyone taken care of? How about everyone punished for Law breaking in due time with attention to not wrongfully oppressing anyone? Sure, we have no monarchy. What about grace, mercy, justice, and just or right judgment? Who can defend who? And, doesn't the prosecutor always win? If no one escapes God's judgment, and we have the gospel and repentance, how do we understand it all?

Do you believe that law, in particular God's Law, is for today? Has the law ever helped anyone? Maybe, does a conviction help the one convicted? Is there any way that the law has helped you? Obviously, a way that the law is good is that it points out sin. It convicts the sinner of his sin.
