President Trump announced on Sunday that the former head of the U.S. Border Patrol under President Barack Obama will be his administration’s new chief of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Trump in a tweet on Sunday announced that Mark Morgan will take over as head of ICE -- replacing former acting ICE Director Ronald Vitiello, who resigned earlier this month.

“I am pleased to inform all of those that believe in a strong, fair and sound Immigration Policy that Mark Morgan will be joining the Trump Administration as the head of our hard working men and women of ICE," Trump tweeted Sunday. "Mark is a true believer and American Patriot. He will do a great job!"

Morgan Leads ICE After Praising Trump on Fox

On Tuesday, Mark Morgan started as acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a role he’s soon expected to take over permanently. The appointment caps a remarkable political comeback for an Obama-era official who alienated both Border Patrol officials and conservative activists and was labeled a “disgrace” in a Breitbart op-ed accusing him of “running scared” on immigration enforcement, reports Politico. Morgan, a former Marine who ran the U.S. Border Patrol at the end of the Obama administration, has clawed his way back with Fox News appearances lavishing praise on the president, including a January appearance Trump watched in which Morgan defended Trump’s push for a wall along the southern border. “The president is right,” Morgan said. While the segments won Trump over, Morgan remains an unwelcome figure to some White House allies and to some immigration officials he will lead.

Morgan’s defenders point to his law enforcement background and say he is highly capable, but grumbling about his appointment underscores the intense pressure Trump officials continue to face on the highly politicized issue of immigration. Many current and former officials aren’t convinced Morgan is an immigration hardliner and believe his Fox News hits were merely opportunism. Others wonder whether Morgan — a former FBI investigator with limited immigration experience — understands the complexities of immigration enforcement. He’ll have to go to great lengths to earn the trust of officials he once turned off as Obama’s Border Patrol chief. “I have never seen a person do a 180 so quickly,” said a former ICE official. “If you look at the public statements he was making when he first came on as head of [the Border Patrol], and you look at the stuff he’s been saying on Fox News you’re like, where did this guy come from? It’s the complete opposite.”
