SCHOOL TELLS GIRL SHE CAN’T QUOTE BIBLE

When a sixth-grader was given an “All About Me” PowerPoint assignment that was intended to include details about her life and an “inspirational saying” of her choice she planned to share John 3:16 in an effort to illustrate the importance of her Christian faith — but she claims that her teacher wouldn’t allow it.

The educator reportedly said that “Bible verses or quotations from the Book of Mormon” weren’t permitted.

Thanks for posting this. It no doubt actually happened by a liberal who is militantly opposed to mixing up church and state.

I have long advocated studying religion in schools as most Americans seem to be quite illiterate in that subject.

Your posting also pointed out the universality of censorship. I have found it to be an all-too-human trait in both liberal and conservative venues. We don't like to hear information that might contradict or question our own ideology.

So long as "studying religion" that means all mainstream religions, I agree. Including, but not limited to: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and a few of the Eastern Traditions.

I agree. Most people do not realize that adding an "s" on the end of the word religion would have been unthinkable 100 years ago. Now we know we have to share the sandbox with other believers in different faiths.

Usually the leaders of these different religions can get along fine (in a ecumenical sense). It is only the members themselves who insist on scapegoating, quarreling and fighting among themselves and others.
It's like two different NFL teams praying to God for victory during halftime.

Why, are all public schools not under the constitution anymore?

Because most schools would allow that scripture to be shared in that setting.

At my son's school he was required to learn key verses from the religious texts of Christianity, judism, islam, and Buddhism when they were learning about world religions. He was even tested on them.

No, not lately. Loads of examples of schools interfering with the open religious expression of students.

I would like to see one example by you of even one school, not allowing a muslim to express their faith or something from the koran like you were asked.

Irrelevant.

What are you suggesting?

I don't quite follow your point. Are you suggesting one group is being mistreated?

You do realize that allowing a student to talk about their religion is not mixing church and state. Right?

Your posting also pointed out the universality of censorship. I have found it to be an all-too-human trait in both liberal and conservative venues. We don't like to hear information that might contradict or question our own ideology.
I wonder how many times I will have to repeat myself on this: Jefferson starts these threads because liberals claim to be opposed to censorship. So this shows them to be hypocrites.

Conservatives are not opposed to censorship. So no reason to post threads when they censor something.

Does anyone feel the teacher was right to prevent the girl from discussing her beliefs?
It was a project about who she was as a person, if I am not mistaken. Given the assignment, I think the inclusion of her beliefs was just fine. I think the teacher made a bad judgement call.

Jesus had much to say about hypocrisy. I have my own moments of being hypocritical and I suspect we all do.

I do not think for a moment that because, say, liberals are for free speech yet they disdain pornography or words that they believe provoke hatred means they are hypocrites in a vacuum. Conservatives say they are against government regulations or big programs and then stubbornly hold on to their unemployment checks or their Social Security--and also try to stay aware of government information about spoiled food that can kill.

Are conservatives hypocritical? Are liberals? Well to the extent they are human beings I would say so. But is "hypocrisy" something that is a fair label to make in an absolute sense?

I would say no.

How many liberals do you know that disdain pornography?

And how is pornography "free speech"?

In this regard liberals are hypocrites.
