Because our society has compassion but lacks wisdom, alchoholics and drug addicts are able to destroy their lives and we sort of kill them on the installment plan. We become their enablers so that they don't have to work. They are fed every single day by people who are well meaning but lack the wisdom to know that if you enable an alchololic you are destroying his liver. The cheeseburger you give him is causing him sclerosis of the liver because he doesn't have to go back to work and work is what he needs to overcome his depression.
