The Cedars and the Pines

In the tops of the cedars and pines,
A whisper was heard sweet and low;
And each branch as it hears and inclines,
Shakes off its fair burden of snow.
List!, the whisper says, Christmas is near;
The pines and the cedars all know
That they’ll aid in the joy and the cheer,
For this day they flourish and grow.

They have heard that their branches so green,
All ladened with silver and gold,
To enliven the fairy-like scene
Tinted candles abundant will hold.
While their fruits far more precious and rare,
Than summer or autumn can bring
Cause the children, so happy and fair,
Their praises to shout and to sing.

Then the whispering turns to a song,
And catching the welcoming cheer,
They, too, for the Christmas-day long,
And joy to leave forests so drear.
As the eve of the year nears its close,
When verdure and flowers seem dead,
Then the evergreen calm in repose,

The People That Long in Darkness Pined

The people that long in darkness pined, have seen a glorious Light;
The people dwell in day, who dwelt in death’s surrounding night.
To hail Thy rise, Thou better Sun, the gathering nations come,
Joyous as when the reapers bear the harvest treasures home.

For Thou our burden hast removed, and quelled the oppressor’s sway,
Quick as the slaughtered squadrons fell in Midian’s evil day.
To us a Child of Hope is born, to us a Son is given,
Him shall the tribes of earth obey, Him all the hosts of heaven.

His name shall be the Prince of Peace, forevermore adored,
The Wonderful, the Counselor, the great and mighty Lord.
His power increasing still shall spread, His reign no end shall know:
Justice shall guard His throne above, and peace abound below.

Praise the Lord!​

And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city. Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Luke 2:1-7​

In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness.
John 1:4-5

Light Looked Down

Light looked down and beheld Darkness.
“There will I go,” said Light.
Peace looked down and beheld War.
“There will I go,” said Peace.
Love looked down and saw Hatred.
“There will I go,” said Love.
Light came and did shine.
Peace came and gave rest.
Love came and brought Life.

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:

Across the Templed Hills

Now sweeps a song of solemn joy
Across the templed hills;
From seraph harps sweet music floats,
That earth and Heaven thrills.

The tuneful notes still ring afar,
Like bells that gaily chime,
Thro’ moonlit skies, from star to star,
To hail the Christmas-time.

We hear again the blissful strain,
The message breathed once more;
All glory be to God! we cry,
Whose name our souls adore.

Hark the song, glad song, overflowing all the earth!
Hark the anthem sweet, bringing news of Jesus’ birth!
While the midnight skies with a wondrous beauty glow,
Comes the Christ-Child to dwell below.

What the Lord has made known to us is still heard across the centuries and through the decades…​

• “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” ~ Still rings true today.
• When He taught them saying, “Blessed are you” ~ Still rings true today.
• When one of disciples ask Him, “Lord, teach us to pray.” He said to them, “When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven.” ~ Still rings true today.
• When from the cross He said, “It is finished!” ~ Still rings true today.
• When He said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” ~ Still rings true today.
• When He said to John, “Behold, I make all things new.” ~ Still rings true today.
• When He who sat on the throne said to John, “Write, for these words are true and faithful.” And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts.” ~ Still rings true today.

God’s Orchestra

The great Composer writes the theme
And gives us each a part to play;
To some a sweet and flowing air,
Smooth and unbroken all the way.

They pour their full heart’s gladness out
In notes of joy and service blent;
But some He gives long bars of “rests,”
With idle voice and instrument.

He who directs the singing spheres,
The music of the morning stars,
Needs, for His full creation’s hymn,
The quiet of the soundless bars.

Be silent unto God, my soul,

Be Now Imitators of Your Lord

Be now imitators of your Lord —
You’re His children through His love outpoured.

As Christ loved and gave Himself for you,
As a sacrifice to God.
All impurity put far away.
Don’t be greedy; watch the things you say.
These aren’t proper for God’s dear children;
You will never gain the wealth of Heaven,
In the kingdom of Christ and God.

Don’t be taken in by empty words;
Those who disobey, God’s wrath incur.
You were darkness, but now you’re light;
Let your life be good and true and right,
And find out what pleases God.
Stay away from fruitless deeds,
Done in secret out of lust and greed.
Let Christ’s light shine on all that’s dark,
And expose what’s missed God’s mark.

Don’t let evil exercise its power.

O the New, New Song

There are songs of joy that I loved to sing,
When my heart was blithe as a bird in spring,
But the song I have learned is so full of cheer,
That the dawn shines out in the darkness drear.

There are strains of home that are dear as life,
And I list to them oft ’mid the din of strife;
But I know of a home that is wondrous fair,
And I sing the psalm they are singing there.

Can my lips be mute, or my heart be sad,
When the gracious Master hath made me glad?
When He points where the many mansions be,
And sweetly says, There is one for thee?

Have a path of light that will lead to Him.

Singing Glory!

I’ve something in my heart that Jesus gave to me,
It makes me feel like singing glory all the day;
He found my captive soul and gave me liberty,
And now I feel like singing glory!

My Savior loosed my tongue that I might speak His praise;
Since then I have been singing glory all the day;
I love to tell the lost of Jesus and His ways,
And oh, it keeps me singing glory!

My Savior took my feet from out the miry clay;
Since then I have been singing glory all the day;
He placed them on the rock that shall not pass away —
I cannot keep from singing glory!

O weary heart and sad, O heavy laden soul,
If you would feel like singing glory all the day,

Some may have a voice to speak a cheering word,
Let the Gospel news o’er all the world be heard,
Other souls to better living can be stirred,
When we use our talents for the Master!

Some may have a willing hand to lend and aid,
Helping those who by their burdens are dismayed,
Richly will the little efforts be repaid,
When we use our talents for the Master!

Let us then be up and doing all the while,
Helping one another meet the daily trial,
For some weary soul with hope will brightly smile,
When we use our talents for the Master!

O the joy that service for the Savior brings,
How the heart rejoicing at its duty sings!
In some other heart the joy-bell sweetly rings,
When we use our talents for the Master!

The River of Thy Grace

The river of Thy grace is flowing free,
We launch upon its depths to sail to Thee;
In the ocean of Thy love we soon shall be,
We are sailing to eternity.

The breezes of Thy love are blowing free,
They tell Thy love to all humanity;
They are singing of the blood of Calvary,
Making white through all eternity.

Thy Spirit calls to all, Come home today;
Come back and find the Savior while you may;
Find that Jesus is the life, the truth, the way,
Leading, guiding to eternity.

Earthly joys cannot compare with all the glory,
When our longing eyes shall see Thy face;
We shall have Thy fellowship forever,
In the splendor of the throne of grace.

Peacefully round us the shadows are falling,
Glad be our praises and trustful our prayer;
Hear us, O Lord, on Thy providence calling,
Lighten our darkness, and banish our care.

O’er the still meadows the night breezes sweep,
Faint fall the footsteps in city and hamlet,
Safely the children are folded in sleep.

Softly may weary ones rest from their duty,
Bright be the dreams of the troubled and worn,
While through the shades beam the stars in their beauty,
Watching the world till the breaking of morn.

Lord of the night, let Thine angels defend us;

Time, By Moments, Steals Away

Time, by moments, steals away, first the hour, and then the day;
Small the daily loss appears, yet it soon amounts to years:
Thus another year is flown, now it is no more our own
If it brought or promised good, than the years before the flood.

But may none of us forget it has left us much in debt;
Favors from the Lord received, sins that have His Spirit grieved;
Marked by an unerring hand in His book recorded stand;
Who can tell the vast amount, placed to each of our account?

Happy, the believing soul! Christ for you has paid the whole;
While you own the debt is large, you may plead a full discharge:
But poor careless sinner, say, what can you to justice pay?
Tremble, lest when life is past, into prison you be cast!

Will you still increase the score? Still be careless, as before?
O, forbid it, gracious Lord, touch their spirits by Thy Word!
Now, in mercy, to them show what a mighty debt they owe!
All their unbelief subdue, let them find forgiveness too.

Spared to see another year, let Thy blessing meet us here;
Come, Thy dying work revive, bid Thy drooping garden thrive:
Sun of righteousness arise, warm our hearts, and bless our eyes;
Let our prayer Thy heart move, make the next year a time of love!

God of the changing year, whose arm of power
In safety leads through danger’s darkest hour,
Here in Thy temple bow Thy children down,
To bless Thy mercy and Thy might to own.

Thine are the beams that cheer us on our way,
And pour around the gladdening light of day;
Thine is the night, and the fair orbs that shine
To cheer its hours of darkness; all are Thine.

If round our path the thorns of sorrow grew,
And mortal friends were faithless, Thou wast true;
Did sickness shake the frame, or anguish tear
The wounded spirit, Thou was present there.

O lend Thine ear, and lift our voice to Thee;
Where’er we dwell, still let Thy mercy be;
From year to year still nearer to Thy shrine
Draw our frail hearts, and make them wholly Thine.

New Year’s Hymn

Join your voices, youth rejoices, new Year hymns again to sing;
For our new and many mercies, Lord, our heartfelt praise we bring.
Summer flowers have bloomed and faded, summer hours have come and fled;
By Thy care we still are aided, by Thy hand we still are fed.

Thou hast kept us, God of glory, since the last New Year began;
Still proclaiming the sweet story, of Thy wondrous love to man.
Shall we longer keep Him waiting, who for us hath waited long?
He to whom both soul and body, heart and life, and all belong?

From this moment, Holy Jesus, may our hearts be wholly Thine!
Then we’ll sing that best of praises, “I am His, and He is mine.”
Jesus! by Thy blood and Spirit, may we all Thy children be,
Then in Thee we shall inherit happiness eternally.

Lord God, Let Me Dedicate

Lord God, let me dedicate, all this year to Thee,
In whatever worldly state Thou wilt have me be:
Not from sorrow, pain or care, freedom dare I claim;
This alone shall be my prayer, glorify Thy name.

Can a child presume to choose where or how to live?
Can a Father’s love refuse all the best to give?
More Thou givest every day than the best can claim
Nor withholdest aught that may glorify Thy name.

If in mercy Thou wilt spare joys that yet are mine;
If on life, serene and fair, brighter rays may shine;
Let my glad heart, while it sings, Thee in all proclaim,
And, whate’er the future brings, glorify Thy name.

If Thou callest to the cross, and its shadow come,
Turning all my gain to loss, shrouding heart and home;
Let me think how Thy dear Son to His glory came,
And in deepest woe pray on, “Glorify Thy name.”
