Hoosiermommy makes a few very good points about disciplining children in post #69:

Discipline is a constant thing. It isn't something that you decide before you go to visit Aunt Suzy. "Hey kids, here is $1; behave like  and we will go out for ice cream after we visit."

Discipline is NOT a bad word! It is a very good word. It is also not something that just stops when you leave the house.

I disagree in the "spank for every offense" teaching.

But I also am not for the "Never say 'NO' " ludicrousness that has been taught for so many years now. Those are the kids that are 12 and throwing a fit in the store because they can't have an item from the store. (When I witnessed this my then 6 year old loooked at him :jawdrop: and said, "He needs a spanking").

I think truly loving your child and remembering who is parent and who is child is the first discipline that must be established. Some parents seem to think that they are to be their child's friend first. Nope!! It is a nice benefit.
Do your job right and it comes naturally.
