The Gospel message doesn't really save us.
Christ saves us. The Gospel is about how he saves us. Those who hear and believe the Gospel are justified by faith, apart from works or obedience to the law, Romans 4:5.

So what happened on the cross? Was it just a show to make God look good after all the killing he did in the OT?

How is it you say that about God?
Jesus shed his blood on the cross and takes away the sins of the world, and you do not enter that grace unless you believe that his blood washes away the sins you repent of doing.

Our sins were washed away before we believed. You rob God of his power to save and take the credit to yourself like all sinners do.

I gave you scripture that plainly says you enter that grace by faith.
Romans 5:2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God.

A Gospel rejecter is one that believes he is saved by his faith and not by the work of Christ that took place over 2000 years ago.
Our Father saves us the same as he did for Jesus. (Romans 8:11)
No one is saved by Jesus' death. (Romans 5:10)
Jesus didn't need to be saved. He was without sin, 2 Corinthians 5:21.
You have no idea of what the Gospel is, Romans 6:5.
You don't know what the Gospel is either.
Jesus died but he was saved from death and now he is the first person in the kingdom of God.

On the other hand, the gospel of Paul was not and still is not the gospel of Jesus. The gospel of Paul is Hellenist aka the NT and the gospel of Jesus is the Tanach; aka the Law and the Prophets. (Matthew 5:17-19
and Luke 16:29-31.
