I just read an article recently that explains why those are impossible.

Light passes through light, and doesn't stop until it hits something. I assume it was something along those lines.

A more possible way is plasma. The problem with plasma is, it cools very quick in the air, which is why the burst is short.

It also dealt with the problems of making something to stop the light, but there was also the power source problem and the issue of the heat generated within the hilt [you'd burn the skinoff your hand].

My light-saber has a graviton ray attachment, as do all light-sabers that I've ever seen, which projects a razor thin sort of virtual mirror out at a specific distance and then balances it there, making the light bounce back to the reflector in the hand-grip.
