Stumblingblock Truths of the Gospel !

1 Cor 1:24

23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;

Two of the most hated and resisted Truths of the Gospel, a stumblingblock to the natural, carnal mind of man are #1 Election of Grace !

First of all election of grace is eternal in that God chose certain individuals, a remnant from mankind in Christ Jesus before the foundation of the world Eph 1:4

4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

This Grace of Election was given them In Christ Jesus before the world began 2 Tim 1:9

9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

Purpose and Grace both refer to election. The Election of Grace Rom 11:5

5 Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.

11 (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth)

Now Two things about this eternal election of Grace that men war against. #1. Its always only for a remnant of men, and not all men without exception, hence Paul calls the elect among the jews a remnant Rom 11:5

5 Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.

Now even in the OT concerning the jews, Isaiah writes of them Isa 1:9

9 Except the Lord of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah.

Thats why Jesus says of the nation of Israel, under National Covenet this Matt 22:14

For many are called, but few are chosen.

See,
not all ethnic jews that comprised ethnic Israel under the OC, were chosen of God only a few of them, out of the many of that nation !

So one of the stumblingblock truths of election of Grace, or salvation by grace, it is the fact that its limited to only a remnant, whether a remnant amongst the jews or a remnant amongst the gentiles ! Sorry, but all without exception cannot be of the election of Grace !

Stumblingblock Truths of the Gospel !2

The other thing about Election of Grace, or Gods purpose of election that's an stumblingblock to the natural mind of man as Per Rom 9:11

(For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth)

That its not based upon the foreseen deeds of men ! This the proud carnal heart of man opposes and strives against , its fuel to his unbelief ! It opposes the natural pride of man !

If you were to examine most objectors of election, you see they almost always say about election, that God foresees what decision man will make in order to include him in His election of Grace ! This is false. Here's why, Paul gives us a great principle that regards Gods Purpose of Election in Rom 9:11, which is, that its made by God before any of the elect were ever born, and had a chance or opportunity to do good or evil ! Notice it reads (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil)

Now, how can God be basing their election upon an foreseen action when the person under consideration was not yet BORN ?

See, if God was choosing me or you based upon a foreseen action of ours, then it would necessitate that He viewed us as already born ! None can perform a good or evil deed before we exist !

So Vs 11 of Rom 9 totally abolishes the false notion that election is based upon foreseeing ones action. That also takes care of the often abused scripture 1 Pet 1:2

2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.

Foreknowledge doesnt mean God foreseeing what an individual will do, because election was before they had any being, before they were born to do any good or evil !

You've missed a very important thing out here, it's by the grace of God through faith

Hebrews 11

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

James 2 17-18

Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.

V 26

For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Also, the remnant that are of God, aren't those who are predestinated. But all those who have soft hearts, who listen tnd are washed by the word of God, and when the word has been planted in their hearts it grows in strength. They are those who do the will of God and obey him, they love him with all their heart, mind, soul and strength, they are those who live by the spirit, not after the flesh.

Gods true people follow Jesus and look to him as the perfect example to follow, they are those who live it out and walk the walk. Not just those who praise him with their mouths and carry on living by the will of their flesh.

I agree with your posts, and topics and am accused because of it?

I asked questions. No evasion from anything and no rabbit trail. I don't even know what you are referencing or how it could be even seen in the way you describe it.

Would you please explain?

IMO the reason the Jews found Jesus to be a stumbling block is that Jesus failed to fulfill any of the Scriptures that the Jews identified as Messianic prophecy.
Of course, we are waiting for Jesus to return [second coming ] to fulfill these prophecies.
But of course, the Jews were not aware that the Messiah would have a second coming.

God chose all of humanity in Jesus Christ. That is what Ephesians 1:4-6 is saying.

God does not predestinate some to salvation and some to hell. If he did that he would be unjust.

Stumblingblock Truths of the Gospel ! 3

The next Gospel truth besides elect that is an stumblingblock to the natural man is Gods imputing of righteousness without works !

Rom 4:6

Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,

What does it mean without works ? Well the word works here covers a large spectrum, for instance, its the greek word ergon and means:

  1. business, employment, that which any one is occupied
    1. that which one undertakes to do, enterprise, undertaking
  2. any product whatever, any thing accomplished by hand, art, industry, or mind
  3. an act, deed, thing done: the idea of working is emphasised in opp. to that which is less than work

ἔργον érgon, er'-gon; from a primary (but obsolete) ἔργω érgō (to work); toil (as an effort or occupation); by implication, an act:—deed, doing, labour, work.

Anything done, a doing of any kind, be it physical or mental natural or spiritual, its a work !

2041 /érgon ("work") is a deed (action) that carries out (completes) an inner desire (intension, purpose).

And so, God imputes righteousness without works. Without anything done, without any doing of any kind !

Now this Grand Truth the natural mind of man cannot receive, and its an stumbling block to him because it gives him no reason to be able to boast !

However, the Truth of it [imputed righteousness without works] is confirmed in the scripture, for instance Rom 5:19

For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

How are these many made righteous ? By the Obedience of One, that One being Jesus Christ, and so Righteousness was imputed to the many without works, without them do anything !

Now thats an stumbling block to the natural man ! And yet thats an Gospel Truth Rom 1:16-17 !

Just a heads up; you are using the word "an" wrong.

Also; obedience is needed for justification. Not that one should boast in anything of themselves but boast in the weakness and inability of self and the strengthening of faith by GOD.

Pretty sure the bible says two things to sorta counter your point.

One is that faith without works is dead, and the other is that each and every one of us will be judged by their works. You are right about it being a stumbling block for most though. But it is self defeating as without work how would one use a stumbling block as a pedestal?

That's all.

Excellent posts!

These two doctrines of Election and Imputed Righteousness are indeed stumblingblocks to the carnal mind, incomprehensible to the natural man. And they're highly offensive to human pride since no amount of effort or works they do in the flesh can please God Rom.8:8: No asking, seeking, their own believing, receiving, works of obedience, etc. As you have stated, it gives men no reason to boast. But both these doctrines are conditioned solely on the Sovereign Will and Purpose of God in the Salvation of His Chosen People Israel Is. 45:17, apart from all the rest of humanity.

God is not willing that any should perish, 2 Peter 3:9.

2 Pet. 3:9 is a stumblingblock to you.

The "any" that God is not willing to perish are all the ones the Father had given to the Son.
In context, they are the "Beloved" of 2 Peter 3:8 and the "us" and "all" that shall come to repentance in 2 Pet. 3:9.

John 6:37-39
37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.
39 And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing,
but should raise it up again at the last day
.

But all the rest of humanity, all the living and dead ungodly non-elect, are being reserved for punishment in that last day, the Day of Judgment.

2 Pet. 2:9
The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:

Rev. 22:11
He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.

Very good!

Christ as their Saviour gives them repentance Acts 5:31

31 Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.

Acts 11:18

18 When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

All the Elect until the end will manifest their Gift of Repentance from their Saviour.
