Sessions met with Russian envoy twice last year, encounters he later did not disclose

Then-Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) spoke twice in 2016 with Russia's ambassador to the U.S., Sergey Kislyak, but did not mention this during his confirmation hearing to become U.S. attorney general. Sessions was asked about possible contacts between President Trump's campaign and the Russian government.

... One of the meetings was a private conversation between Sessions and Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak that took place in September in the senator’s office, at the height of what U.S. intelligence officials say was a Russian cyber campaign to upend the U.S. presidential race.

The previously undisclosed discussions could fuel new congressional calls for the appointment of a special counsel to investigate Russia’s alleged role in the 2016 presidential election. As attorney general, Sessions oversees the Justice Department and the FBI, which have been leading investigations into Russian meddling and any links to Trump’s associates. He has so far resisted calls to recuse himself.

At his Jan. 10 Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing, Sessions was asked by Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) what he would do if he learned of any evidence that anyone affiliated with the Trump campaign communicated with the Russian government in the course of the 2016 campaign.

“I’m not aware of any of those activities,” he responded. He added: “I have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign and I did not have communications with the Russians.”

Officials said Sessions did not consider the conversations relevant to the lawmakers’ questions and did not remember in detail what he discussed with Kislyak.

“There was absolutely nothing misleading about his answer,” said Sarah Isgur Flores, Sessions’s spokeswoman.

Another high ranking member of the Trump Campaign and Administration had been in contact with Russian officials, but decided to keep it quiet during his Senate confirmation.

Like Flynn, Sessions also suffers from a sudden attack of amnesia, unable to remember the details of the conversations, but contends that it was linked to his position as a member of the Armed Services Committee and not the Trump Campaign.

Given how vociferous Trump and conservatives were in denouncing Bill Clinton's airport meeting with the Obama Attorney General, will they now hold Sessions to the same standard?

Sessions was performing his regular job...met with lots of ambassadors and it had nothing to do with the Trump campaign. You guys are so desperate it's getting pathetic.

The Washington Post contacted all 26 members of the 2016 Senate Armed Services Committee to see whether any lawmakers besides Sessions met with Kislyak in 2016. Of the 20 lawmakers who responded, every senator, including Chairman John McCain (R-Ariz.), said they did not meet with the Russian ambassador last year. The other lawmakers on the panel did not respond as of Wednesday evening.

If "glorydaz" had taken the time to read the full article he would have known that of the 20 senators on the 2016 Senate Armed Services Committee who responded to their poll, none had met with the Russian Ambassador once, let alone twice.

Every member of the government, who in their official capacity meets with a representative of a foreign power, is obliged to report such contacts - why didn't Session's report them?

Why is the Washington Post well known for giving us only half the truth?

I'll tell you why...they're biased and it's no secret.

Exactly what the Washington Post was accused of by the Nixon Administration and their lemmings, back when the WP first broke the Watergate Scandal.

And the fact is that Sessions is on video lying that he had no contact whatsoever with the Russians during the period in question.

Spin it the way the liar; his fellow cronies; and legion of lemmings now must; but said fact is his own admission during his confirmation hearing.

McCain and Lindsey Graham were on CNN in a town hall meeting last night. They both agreed this Trump campaign and Russian interaction needs to continue to be investigated and may require an independent prosecutor. And Jim Sessions cannot be that person. Lindsey said he has been friends with Sessions for many years but he cannot be the prosecutor because he was a part of Trump's campaign.

Trump only fired Flynn after his connection was leaked to the press and now Sessions not making his Russian contacts public sure smells like a cover up. When and why did the Russians become our friends? When they took over Crimea or when they killed the opposition or when they killed the free press or when multiple links to US politicians and business associates were established?

It will be telling if Trump pressures to lift the sanctions against Russia for no good reason.

It's interesting to see how many people in Trump's cabinet (Secretary of State Rex Tillerson being one that comes to mind) have close ties to Moscow. Trump has been in bed with the Russians for decades now, it looks like it's coming back to bite him.

Unfortunately this news story is totally biased against Sessions. The question he was asked under oath was narrow in scope. The left wing media refuses to give Sessions the benefit of the doubt since they want to push a crazy conpiracy theory of collusion between Trump and Russia.

Sessions was performing his regular job...met with lots of ambassadors and it had nothing to do with the Trump campaign.

Then why wouldn't he say that?

In January, Senator Patrick Leahy, Democrat of Vermont, asked Sessions for answers to written questions. “Several of the President-elect’s nominees or senior advisers have Russian ties. Have you been in contact with anyone connected to any part of the Russian government about the 2016 election, either before or after election day?” Leahy wrote.

Sessions responded with one word: “No.”

Sessions is toast.

Sessions is toast.

Beceause he was never asked or at least understood the question being asked to mean at any time as Senator, the context of the discussion prior to the question was narrowly focused on him working for Trump.

No. It was not narrow at all. In fact, it couldn't have been more general.

Did you actually read the the whole context or just the quote mined question by the media? I would normally post it here for you but I'm currently on my phone and its simply too hard to copy and paste
