Why wouldn't it be good news unless they knew they had to abandon their lives to God and they didn't want to?
What does the text say CR?

"For I know that after my death you will surely act corruptly and turn aside from the way that I have commanded you. And in the days to come evil will befall you, because you will do what is evil in the sight of the LORD, provoking him to anger through the work of your hands.""

(Dt 31:27)

This comes after God reveals to Moses this very fact.

"And the LORD said to Moses, "Behold, you are about to lie down with your fathers. Then this people will rise and whore after the foreign gods among them in the land that they are entering, and they will forsake me and break my covenant that I have made with them.
17 Then my anger will be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them and hide my face from them, and they will be devoured. And many evils and troubles will come upon them, so that they will say in that day, 'Have not these evils come upon us because our God is not among us?'
18 And I will surely hide my face in that day because of all the evil that they have done, because they have turned to other gods.
19 "Now therefore write this song and teach it to the people of Israel. Put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against the people of Israel.
20 For when I have brought them into the land flowing with milk and honey, which I swore to give to their fathers, and they have eaten and are full and grown fat, they will turn to other gods and serve them, and despise me and break my covenant.
21 And when many evils and troubles have come upon them, this song shall confront them as a witness (for it will live unforgotten in the mouths of their offspring). For I know what they are inclined to do even today, before I have brought them into the land that I swore to give."
(Dt 31:16-21)

How does God know that they will turn away from Him? What does the text say?

It says because He knew what they were inclined to do the day He spoke to Moses, before anyone even stuck their pinky toe into the Jordan River to cross into the Promised Land.

CR said:
Can you not see a heart issue in this that God was after from them by the conditional promises He made?
I can clearly see a heart issue.

The Israelites had sinful, unbelieving hearts.

That condition can't be self remedied.

That's why God makes promises in the scriptures that He will give us hearts of flesh.

He has to give them to us because we can't give them to ourselves.

There is much more than hearts of flesh you are overlooking because even James says, "purify your own heart" (Jas.4:8). So if God gave a new one why suppose it would not be a clean one __ unless we are capable of dirtying His, gifted, new one? __ We are.

"First the natural and then the spiritual" 1Cor.15:46:

Let this sink in: The OT is the "natural". God made conditional promises to Israel re the "promised land" that would allow them to enter it had they kept them. I assume you know the account of it all.

The NT is the "Spiritual". God again, makes the conditional promises of a "Promise Land" that will allow us to enter into it (Romans 8). He initiated His program by first giving His promises to the man Jesus. Jesus kept them and performed all of God's commands. That secured promises to Him along with the ability to pass them on to His Spiritual progeny, i.e., those born again from above who would be conceived by His Holy Spirit __ those Whom He would choose to hold to Himself after their salvation and had counted the cost of what abandonment to Him would entail (John 20:22).

Jesus is the First of "many sons who will be brought unto glory"; The First of first fruits", all part of the Spiritual "Promised Land" per Rom.8:23).(Heb. 2:10)

Hope that helps.
