I was with you right up to the last sentence..... The reason the peasants side with the strong central government is because it has a larger budget of stolen money to give them free stuff.

Horsefeathers. In the middle ages, the king gave them nothing but a bit of respite from oppression, and they still sided with him against the nobles.

Today we call it income redistribution,

No. It's called "adjusting compensation to increase net return", and "CEO compensation." The guys running corporations have been looting them by stealing from workers and stockholders.

The wealth created by investors and workers is being tapped off by those running the corporations. Unless of course, they happen to also hold a majority of the stock.

Back in the day we called it stealing.

Today, we call it "modern management."

Would you like to see some numbers?

Now YOU'RE mixing apples with oranges. You can't compare European law enforcement with American. They operate under a whole different government system.

Asian, actually. Georgia is in Asia. And it might be true that Georgians are more mature and civilized than Americans, but I don't see any evidence for that. If we abolished traffic cops, I suspect that we'd have pretty much the same experience.

And the experience in Georgia is consistent with the experience in Portishead, England where the government removed all traffic signals from a highly traveled and congested road:

For the trial period, roads were monitored using cameras to see the impact of no traffic signals on congestion. (A 20 mile-per-hour speed limit was instituted over that same period.) In the video and in comments on articles about the initiative, residents said there have been big improvements—drivers pay more attention to the road and nearby pedestrians as opposed to traffic lights. Plus, there are savings, as each traffic lights usually costs 30,000 to 50,000 pounds to maintain.
http://thecityfix.com/blog/naked-streets-without-traffic-lights-improve-flow-and-safety/

Without signals or anyone to tell them what to do, drivers had to resort to cooperation and courtesy in order to navigate the streets safely.

It worked better.

Hatred of the police is growing rapidly, and they have a hard time understanding why....
Police, are like any other business. Thats right, its a business. Like the mafia collecting taxes off those committing crimes in "their" neighborhoods. And like any business, its subjected to reviews. Reviews spread fast.

I am a father, and I have taught my daughter to never trust a police man unless daddy is there. Thats what our police have forced me to do. There standards have fallen. Fear has infected the police department. Their fear is so deep that they are lashing out at every little "threat" they see, afraid they wont come home. Our military has rules of engagement, that they cannot fire unless being fired upon.... our police do not have that rule and they willingly fire first.

So yes, lets give them bigger guns ..... lets worsen the problem.

Hi there! You're new. Welcome to TOL. Now, in regard to your post, whenever there is a threat or perceived threat, there are rules of engagement for Police Officers as well. It isn't fear. It's reasonable defense called for in varying situations. Teach your daughter to keep her nose clean and she won't have anything to worry about.

The reason for increasing distrust of police, which the police seem to understand, is that everyone is carrying a video camera these days. Hence, the abortive attempt by police in some states to outlaw videoing police by re-interpreting the wiretap laws.

And why the Supreme Court had to re-affirm the right to video anyone in public at any time, and had to affirm that police could not grab one's cell phone without a warrant.

Corrupt behavior is no longer a secret in many cases, and the bad ones are starting to get prison time for things they used to cover up. In some cases, without the video, the victim would have gone to prison, instead.

Vest cameras protect the good police and indict the corrupt ones. Every officer should have one.

Yeah, make sure she pays all of her cigarette tax, so she is not murdered by an NYPD cop. Her nose will be clean and her neck will feel better from not being choked to death by a policeman.......IMJ=:loser:

Make sure she does not camp illegally, especially in New Mexico, so the police don't shoot her in the back with their AR 15s. Her nose will be clean and her back will feel better from not having her spine shattered by bullets moving at 3,300 feet per second out of a policeman's gun.......IMJ=:loser:

Make sure she does not sleep in crib while she is little, especially in Georgia, that way the cops there won't lob a flash bang grenade into her crib and burn off her face, it is hard to keep your nose clean when your face is burnt off by a flash bang grenade thrown by a policeman......IMJ=:loser:

You confuse the problems of corporate corruption with government corruption and overreach. Although in some circumstances they are obviously intertwined, birds of a feather you know..... both entities steal, they just do it in different ways.

They are the same thing. Both are abuses of power, and it really doesn't matter who is doing it.

Both the same way. And it's not really theft, it's extortion. Theft is when someone takes something from from you without social or governmental sanction. When they take it from you because they have the power to do it, and act as though it's their right to do it, that's abuse of power.

"pastor" Mike Franklin slandered God by saying that the criminal cops were "doing God's work."

Another consequence of the stupid, failed, immoral drug war.

You clearly don't know what "keep your nose clean" means and you enjoy putting a spin on facts to assist your agenda against law enforcement. Shocking. :plain: It's a wonder anyone is alive around a cop! You're a laugh riot.
Do yourself a favor and get a life outside of infowars.

With increasing frequency, they are nailing culprits to the wall. Cuts both ways, too. Police have found that there are a lot fewer people challenging DWI when they have a video of the arrest. Sobering moment when the accused sees what he or see actually did to get arrested.

And of course, more police are going to prison for lying or abusing citizens. Which is a good thing. As you said, getting rid of the bad ones is important.

And perhaps even more impressive, a city that recently put vest cams on all police found that complaints against police fell dramatically, as did arrests for disorderly conduct and similar things. It seems that both citizens and police behave better when they know they're being watched.

And that might be the best reason of all.

But videos don't tell the whole story. Context is everything. I'm not impressed with the vest cam performance so far however, I will agree that it can be a deterrent.

For those who still believe the lies that cops are there "to protect and serve"

http://reason.com/blog/2014/09/26/woman-drowns-after-cops-threaten-rescuer

And please spare the "few bad apples" comments, this stuff happens every day. Political power is what leads to mass murder more often than not...

All the facts are not represented in this article. That's El Paso. I don't suppose that fence delineates the Mexican-American border? Or is it possible that the Police Officers were protecting against further tragedy? It's impossible to tell from the article but that's the point of some of these sites. They spin a story to support an agenda.

Additional comment: I checked out the location of the drowning and it's north of the border so the fence was not a border delineation. That does not dismiss two things, 1) the water may have been too swift or the situation too dangerous for average citizens to conduct a safe rescue or 2) the woman may have already been dead at the time the Police told people to get away. Once there is a dead person at a scene, no one but those trained in evidence collection can access it to rule out foul play.

Another additional comment:
Take a look at the location according to the article and take a look at the same location here:

I think it's pretty evident why the Police said stay away. It's called drainage ditch flooded amidst Texas gully washer so Officers were trying to protect against further tragedy. Try again CL. On second thought, spare us, please.
Ever play "No Anchovies Please" backward? LOL
