Special counsel Robert Mueller has charged a lawyer with allegedly lying to investigators about covering up his discussions about Ukraine with former Trump campaign aide Rick Gates and another person in September 2016, while the Trump campaign operation was in full swing.
The filing is further evidence that Mueller's investigators have ratcheted the pressure on Gates as he negotiates a plea deal and that they continue to look into the work of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and Gates while they worked for Russian-allied clients and the Trump campaign.
Alex Van Der Zwaan, who is expected to plead guilty Tuesday afternoon, is also accused of lying about the failure to turn over an email communication to the special counsel's office.
He would become the fourth guilty plea in the Mueller investigation after Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos and former national security adviser Michael Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to investigators last year, and an online supplier of fake usernames pleaded guilty to identity fraud last week. Mueller has also indicted 13 Russians for their work to influence the 2016 presidential election through online social media.
...
There's no indication from the document that Van Der Zwaan was in touch with Gates about the political adviser's work in the election, though the charging document is the first evidence that prosecutors have sought -- and potentially even received emails and recorded phone calls related to -- Gates' interactions while he worked for Donald Trump. The separate charges Gates faces in federal court involve activities related to his Ukrainian work with Manafort in years prior to their Trump campaign work.
...
Gates, meanwhile, has had attorneys working on a plea deal with Mueller's office for more than a month, indicating he's poised to cooperate in the investigation, sources familiar with the case told CNN last week. But no deal has materialized as of Tuesday morning.
He has already spoken to Mueller's team about his case multiple times, CNN first reported last week. His cooperation could be another building block for Mueller in a possible case against Trump or key members of his team.

Right now, that’s speculation: We don’t know how the Manafort case is actually going to play out. But that is almost certainly Mueller’s strategy — get van der Zwaan to get to Gates to get to Manafort, and from there, get vital information about Trump’s real ties to Russia.

What this shows, more than anything else, is how methodical and wide-ranging the Mueller investigation is — that it’s willing to look all the way back to an obscure report from the winter of 2012 in order to get to the truth about the Trump-Russia scandal. Mueller is starting at the lowest level, with seemingly unrelated people like van der Zwaan, to get to the big fish.

Looks like "old Barb" is hoping with ALL his heart, they'll find out something scandalous to pin on Trump, even if it's not EXACTLY true. But then again, who cares if it's true, right Barb?

Barbara thinks that "charging" someone with a crime is somehow "getting" them. The man is on serious drugs.

A lawyer who is the son-in-law of a Russian oligarch named in the controversial Donald Trump dossier pleaded guilty on Tuesday to lying to investigators in special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe.

It is not clear to what extent Alex van der Zwaan may be helping Mueller, who is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible ties to the Trump campaign. A plea agreement signed last week doesn't mention cooperation as a condition.

Instead of getting upset and tossing generic abuse, why not educate yourself and learn about it?

Might save you some embarrassment in the future.

And so far, this doesn't really say anything about Trump other than he has very poor judgement in the people with whom he associates. Be patient. Whatever crimes Trump did or did not commit will be eventually clear.

Yep ... he is starting at the bottom with the hope that they will flip. What we DO know is that Trump's reaction and stand on Russia is not normal. He behaves like he is guilty ... and has shown he has no desire to protect America from another cyber attack/disinformation campaign.

Obama, the FBI and "17 intelligence agencies" all knew as far back as 2012 that Russia was meddling and interfering with our elections. THE FACT is, they and Obummer did NADA. Nothing. It was working in their favor until 2016, and our President had nothing to do with it, as has been proven.

There is that. But Trump has shown an excessive obsession with secrecy in the past. He does act guilty. But that comes with narcissism. We'll just have to see. It looks worse and worse with each revelation, but it could be all a rather complex coincidence.

and has shown he has no desire to protect America from another cyber attack/disinformation campaign.

It's hard for a person to get enthused about stopping something that helped him out.

People are now being indicted and pleading guilty as a result of the investigations initiated by the Obama justice department. You didn't know that?

President Donald Trump, after being criticized for his response to Russia's election meddling, challenged Attorney General Jeff Sessions to launch an investigation into the Obama administration for failing to do enough to stop the 2016 election foreign interference.

During his last two years in office, Obama also imposed sanctions on Russian individuals and entities for election meddling, kicked out 35 Russian diplomats and closed two Kremlin compounds in the United States.

Trump has yet to impose sanctions overwhelmingly passed by Congress last year and missed deadlines to identify which Russian individuals and entities would be on the sanctions list. Last month, the Trump administration decided against implementing the sanctions against Russia

You didn't know that, either, um? This is why it's a bad idea to get all your news from sites that match your ideology. Open up your eyes a little. It could spare you another embarrassment like this.

As of yet, we don't know what Trump knew or did in this mess. But Mueller is working on that. Be patient.

Is it just me, or has this become the Obama "birther" thing all over again?

If they ever find anything, it will be far too late to matter at all. The only people impacted by this are the lawyers cashing their checks.

We will. Maybe before he's done you can learn how to spell Mueller.
