How does one search for past posts?

It really is kind of a silly rule. I've not seen this on other boards I'm on.
That's because the other boards you are on haven't needed to implement such a rule. (I run several other forums and none of them need such a rule)
The truth is... TOL is a combative website and because of that there are people out there constantly trying to cause chaos to the TOL website. The search feature can be used in a way that will dramatically slow down the TOL website.
Therefore a couple years ago we altered the search feature so that new members couldn't use it. It's less likely than that it will be abused by folks who have some time investment in to TOL.
