It its day it was a ground breaker for visual effects. "I'm sorry, Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that" lives on and is about all that I took from it as the years past. ;)

You didn't have an idea of what the monolith was or represented?

I saw it as nothing more than some leftover relic of an advanced civilization. A physical symbol of well-known "Kilroy was here." ;)

AMR
Could be.
I sorta saw it as a new age hippy representation of something similar to the tree of knowledge.
Man afraid to touch it at first, but still wanting to touch it, and eventually do touch it. (as Eve did.)
But it was never enough, so the quest continued to find more.
Then man finds one on the moon ...... and they all gather around to touch it.
And it is still not enough, so the quest continued onward to other planets even further up and away.

As Satan told Eve, ye shall be as 'god'.
And how Satan wanted to ascend to the heights of heaven.

Kind of a "looking for GOD in all the wrong places".

Kubrick was into all kinds of cultish stuff, looking for some 'higher' reality.

I just saw The Shinning yesterday, total classic, Jack Nicholson is great. I saw Rear window on the TCM channel few weeks ago, love Raymond Burr.
