Cervantes took the ideals of chivalry from another age and employed them in a time and place wherein they no longer were germane.
An idealist jousting at windmills.
This is a protagonist for all time.
Today, I feel that the ideals which I have espoused and continue to espouse are from another age and very few people consider them worthy.

what time was that?
he fought in the battle of lepanto

I know and as far as we know he fought with distinction.
It was not the Age of Chivalry.
I think Cervantes admired that age even whilst exposing some of its behaviors as foolish and destructive.
I have not seen Dulcinea as "The Church"? I'm interested in how you arrived at that characterization?
She was an artificial construct of feminine pulchritude.

I am not denying, nor endorsing anything. I am thinking about this masterpiece of literature.
You have presented a way of looking at it that is interesting.
What was Cervantes motive for such a specious rendering?

I actually believe him when he says he didn't write it
so
I have to only explain why he had it translated and published
are you ready for this?
he thought it was a classic
