"All hell is breaking loose in Washington D.C. after a four-page memo detailing extensive FISA court abuse was made available to the entire House of Representatives Thursday. The contents of the memo are so explosive, says Journalist Sara Carter, that it could lead to the removal of senior officials in the FBI and the Department of Justice and the end of Robert Mueller's special counsel investigation."

"Lawmakers who have seen the memo are calling for its immediate release, while the phrases "explosive," "shocking," "troubling," and "alarming" have all been used in all sincerity. One congressman even likened the report's details to KGB activity in Russia. “It is so alarming the American people have to see this,” Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan told Fox News. “It's troubling. It is shocking,” North Carolina Rep. Mark Meadows said. “Part of me wishes that I didn't read it because I don’t want to believe that those kinds of things could be happening in this country that I call home and love so much.”

Here's why the Trump people have launched this latest diversion story:

WASHINGTON
January 18, 2018 05:00 AM

Updated January 18, 2018 02:03 PM
The FBI is investigating whether a top Russian banker with ties to the Kremlin illegally funneled money to the National Rifle Association to help Donald Trump win the presidency, two sources familiar with the matter have told McClatchy.

FBI counterintelligence investigators have focused on the activities of Alexander Torshin, the deputy governor of Russia’s central bank who is known for his close relationships with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and the NRA, the sources said.

It is illegal to use foreign money to influence federal elections.

It’s unclear how long the Torshin inquiry has been ongoing, but the news comes as Justice Department Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s sweeping investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 election, including whether the Kremlin colluded with Trump’s campaign, has been heating up.

The Trump-Russia-NRA Connection: Here’s What You Need to Know
Did the Kremlin funnel payments to help Trump's campaign through the National Rifle Association?
Unprecedented Trump Support
The National Rifle Association spent tens of millions of dollars backing Trump's presidential bid in 2016. The NRA endorsed Trump in May 2016. And the NRA disclosed it spent at least $30 million on Trump's behalf and attacking Hillary Clinton. That level of support is unprecedented – more than twice what the NRA disclosed it spent on Mitt Romney's 2012 presidential run.

The Banker and "Godfather"
The key figure in the NRA/Russia investigation, McClatchy reports, is Alexander Torshin. Torshin is a longtime Putin ally who previously served as a top Russian senator. He is now a deputy governor of Russia's central bank, where his purview includes cracking down on the outflow of dirty money.

That's ironic, because Torshin has been linked to money laundering. Bloomberg reported on the conclusions of a 2013 investigation by Spanish authorities, writing that "Alexander Torshin instructed members of the Moscow-based Taganskaya crime syndicate how to launder ill-gotten gains through banks and properties in Spain."

As a result of this investigation, Spain convicted a Torshin underling – who reportedly called Torshin "boss" and "godfather" in recordings – and sentenced this man to nearly four years in prison for illegal transactions totaling more than $1.8 million. Torshin himself was not charged; a Spanish official told Bloomberg that Russia won't cooperate in cases against top politicians. Toshin has denied any wrongdoing.

NRA Connections
Torshin helped establish a Russian gun group called Right to Bear Arms, whose president calls Torshin "a great gun lover." Torshin is also a life member of the NRA – and forged ties to its leadership after attending the NRA's national convention in 2013. McClatchy reports that, in 2015, Toshin hosted "a high-level NRA delegation" during a week-long Moscow trip "that included meetings with influential Russian government and business figures." An attendee describes a debauched week: "They were killing us with vodka and the best Russian food," he told McClatchy. "The trip exceeded my expectations by logarithmic levels."

Trump Connections
At the May 2016 NRA convention in Louisville, Kentucky, where Donald Trump accepted the group's endorsement, Torshin shared a table at dinner with the candidate's son Donald Jr. According to Bloomberg, Torshin claimed to also have met now-president Trump at the convention, and that: "He keeps photos of the event on his computer tablet."

FBI Investigates if Trump Campaign Received Russian Money Funneled Through NRA
The FBI is investigating a Russian banker for allegedly funneling money to President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign through contributions made to the National Rifle Association.

As special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe continues, investigators are now looking into Russian banker Alexander Torshin, who has ties to the Kremlin, two sources told McClatchy. The anonymous sources did not say how long the investigation has been going on and remained unnamed due to the confidential nature of the Mueller investigation.

Torshin has a close relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin and ties to the NRA.

Who Is Alexander Torshin? Russian Banker Linked With Putin Talked With Donald Trump Jr. at 2016 Dinner
Allegations of collusion continued to pile up against Donald Trump Jr. this week, with the New York Times reporting Friday that the first son went to a May 2016 dinner attended by a top Russian official who was trying to set up a covert meeting with the campaign.

NBC News confirmed Saturday that Donald Trump Jr. talked with Alexander Torshin, a friend of Russian President Vladimir Putin and the deputy head of the country's central bank, at an event hosted by the National Rifle Association in Kentucky. But the first son's lawyer insisted the duo didn't sit together.

...

The encounter matters because Torshin was involved, through an intermediary, in what was described in an email sent to Trump campaign aides as a "Russian backdoor overture." Jared Kushner, Donald Trump's son-in-law, denied his request for a meeting with the candidate on an email chain that allegedly also included aides Rick Dearborn, Paul Manafort and Rick Gates. The Times reported that Kushner wrote that the campaign should "pass on this."

Senate investigators argued Tuesday that Kushner had not turned over the messages to them, as they'd requested as part of their probe into the Kremlin's meddling in the election. Kushner's attorney denied it....

Regardless, Torshin has quite the reputation: In 2016, Bloomberg reported that police in Spain believed Torshin was the "godfather" of the Taganskaya crime syndicate and had helped its members launder money. He's also been linked to the Trumps before: In 2015, he said he personally met the billionaire.

There are multiple, ongoing probes into whether Trump aides collaborated with the Kremlin to interfere in the 2016 election. So far, two men—the aforementioned Gates and Manafort—have been indicted in connection with special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, and one—George Papadopoulos—has pleaded guilty for lying to the FBI about his contact with Russia.

Mueller’s Probe Is Dangerously Close to a Republican Red Line
The special prosecutor has reportedly ensnared the N.R.A.
As the multiple probes into Donald Trump’s ties to Russia have spiraled onward, Republicans have increasingly moved to cast doubt on their origins, plunging the inquiries into a stew of partisan bickering. And though in recent weeks members of Congress have seemingly moved to bury the hatchet, a new report could re-ignite—and even worsen—partisan tensions. According to McClatchy D.C., the F.B.I. is investigating whether a top Russian banker with close ties to President Vladimir Putin illegally channeled money through the N.R.A. to bolster Trump’s bid for the White House. The revelation that the special prosecutor might target the gun lobby, arguably the most influential and sacrosanct faction of the Republican Party, could embolden G.O.P. lawmakers to bring a swift end to the Trump-Russia probe and hasten a Mueller ouster. (The N.R.A. did not immediately respond to the outlet’s request for comment.)

At the center of the N.R.A. probe is Alexander Torshin, the deputy governor of Russia’s central bank, who is well known for ties to both the N.R.A. and the Kremlin, and who was charged with money laundering in Europe. (He has denied wrongdoing.) Torshin has occasionally appeared on the periphery of the F.B.I. probe; the Russian banker was reportedly instructed to broker a meeting between Putin and Trump during the campaign, and is said to have met with Donald Trump Jr. at the N.R.A.’s 2016 convention. According to McClatchy, the F.B.I. seeks to determine whether Torshin leveraged his N.R.A. ties to funnel Russian money to the Trump campaign. (McClatchy was unable to reach Torshin for comment.)

It is unclear when Mueller’s team opened its inquiry, what stage the investigation has reached, or to what extent the F.B.I. can substantiate the money trail. But of the $55 million the N.R.A. spent on the 2016 election, a staggering $30 million was shelled out to the Trump campaign—three times the amount it spent on Mitt Romney in 2012, McClatchy reports. Two sources told the outlet that the N.R.A. may have actually spent somewhere in the ballpark of $70 million during the 2016 cycle, accounting for expenditures that private groups aren’t required to disclose. Torshin has also popped up in Congressional probes; both the House and Senate Intelligence Committees, as well as Democratic lawmakers on the Senate Judiciary Committee have sought information on the Russian banker. Citing a source familiar with the exchange, McClatchy reports that during Don Jr.’s closed-door hearing with the Senate Intelligence Committee last month, the eldest Trump son was asked about his controversial run-in with Torshin at the N.R.A. convention. __ Alan Futerfas,__ a lawyer for Trump Jr., dismissed their exchange as chitchat. “It was all gun-related small talk,” he told McClatchy.

Senator Dianne Feinstein, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, sent letters to J.D. Gordon and Sam Clovis, both senior foreign-policy advisers to the Trump campaign, requesting that they turn over any communications they had regarding or with the N.R.A., Torshin, and Paul Erickson, a conservative activist with strong ties to the gun lobby, among others. As The New York Times reported in December, Erickson sent a May 2016 e-mail to Trump campaign adviser Rick Dearborn with the subject line “Kremlin Connection.” In the e-mail, Erickson reportedly asked Dearborn, and then Senator Jeff Sessions, for advice in setting up a meeting between Trump and Putin and sought to use the annual N.R.A. convention in Kentucky that year to make “first contact.” (Erickson could not be reached by the Times for comment.) While Erickson did not explicitly name Torshin, sources familiar with the situation who spoke to the Times said that the message appeared to refer to the Russian banker.

This would possibly be enough to convince republican congressmen to tolerate Trump firing Mueller. If the NRA was caught up in this the damage to the party, which depends greatly on NRA support would be critical.

The only moderating influence would be the public backlash, which would be considerable, given the low approval rate for Trump and the republican congress. I'm thinking that they would do their best to wait until after the 2018 elections to make their move.

It may come as a shock to conservatives, but "FISA court abuses" is so far below the public radar that it doesn't rank in the top 100!

It may come as a shock to conservatives, but public concern over FISA court abuses doesn't rank in the top 20!
Not to rubes like you, but Americans with common sense know what it means for democracy. Clinton, the DNC, the FBI and Obama all worked together to change an election. You focus on Trump's weight and how many scoops of ice cream he chooses.

They are fools and fail to realize that once the deep state gets in power it is almost impossible to dislodge them!

Especially with those rubes running around trying to defend the indefensible!

As for "defending the indefensible," I'm sure there's a heated conversation going in the White House right now between Melania and "The Donald" as to why his own personal lawyer would send a $138 000 check to Stormy Daniels - one month before the 2016 Election!

The NRA/Russia connection is a really serious issue. Expect Mueller learn from where that money came.

All hell will break loose, if he gets that done.

Trump Had Ties to Russian Mob Figures: Testimony
Fusion GPS founder Glenn Simpson testified that the real estate mogul built relationships with Russian gangsters, who were themselves tied to the Russian government.
"We also had sort of more broadly learned that Mr. Trump had long time associations with Italian organized crime figures. And as we pieced together the early years of his biography, it seemed as if during the early part of his career he had connections to a lot of Italian mafia figures, and then gradually during the nineties became associated with Russian mafia figures," Simpson testified.

By the 2000s, he continued, "various criminals were buying the properties."

Asked by the House intelligence committee's top Democrat, Rep. Adam Schiff of California, whether these transactions would be known by or on behalf of the Russian government, Simpson offered a one-word answer: "Yes."

There's no law against Trump being buds with criminals. Only if they find that Trump broke the law with them, is that a crime. On the other hand, it's a political problem for him, already weakened by so many other scandals.
