McConnell Lets Slip Republicans Plan On Doing Nothing In 2016 And The Reason Is Infuriating

If you ever find yourself struggling to explain to a foreign friend why the U.S. Congress is so universally reviled, look no further than this bit of political cowardice.

In an explosive report by The Hill’s Alexander Bolton, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s office freely and openly admitted that his party’s legislative goal for the next 11 months is to do absolutely nothing.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), seeking to protect his majority in a tough cycle for Republicans, is leaning toward holding back several measures that have bipartisan support but are divisive in his conference.

Some of these “divisive” bills that Republicans want to shove under the rug until they win their re-elections? A crucial justice reform bill. A long sought after authorization bill to combat ISIS (Remember when Republicans said they were serious about fighting terrorism? Ha!). A minimum wage increase? Any action on immigration? Nothing. They’ll show up to their office to collect their paychecks, hold a few fundraisers, but don’t expect them to do their jobs. Not this year.

Astoundingly, McConnell’s “Do Nothing” strategy is being praised by fellow Republicans. Here’s The Hill again:

“McConnell is smart to wait on issues that divide us until such time as we can achieve a consensus,” said a senior Republican aide. “There’s no question that some members want to turn to some things sooner than others. But McConnell’s duty is to do what’s best for the entire conference. Seems what’s best for the conference is to focus on the things that unite us.”

Yeah, sitting on his hands until they go numb, what a hero.

But if cowardice permeates every corner of the Republican Party, it’s not without reason. For years Republican politicians have been held hostage by a radical fringe of their base that says any bipartisan cooperation means you aren’t a “true” conservative. Just passing a bill to give more support to veterans is considered a “betrayal” to the party if it means working with Democrats. You accomplish exclusively conservative goals or you don’t accomplish anything at all.

McConnell, with all the backbone of a snail, isn’t taking any chances. He’ll wait out the election and hope that voters focus on how his party never once compromised with “the enemy,” and not, say, on the fact that they hadn’t done their jobs for 12 months.

How does he plan to cover his tracks? It’s shameless – but kind of clever. McConnell plans to intentionally slow down and string out the dozen annual appropriations bills. Those can be addressed individually and, if time is properly squandered, can go on pretty much indefinitely. By the end of the year, with 12 appropriations bills in hand, he can brag about having done something. Just not very much.

When we think about how the election cycle brings out the worst in politicians, we typically picture the attack ads, the rat race, the pettiness. There’s another side: The craven attempt to cling onto jobs by a group of people who demonstrably do not deserve them. It means in this crucial year, when the United States faces a ton of major challenges, Americans will be treated to nothing – and all because a few politicians are worried what their most toxic supporters would think if they actually bothered show up to work.

And you all are going to keep voting for these jerks.

Another one drops. Rand Paul ends his campaign.

“It has been a privilege to give voice to the liberty movement in this race, and I believe we have broadened the debate by being part of it," Paul said on Fox News. "Although today I will suspend my campaign for the presidency, I will continue to fight on for liberty, for the Constitution, for justice in the United States Senate."

Oh, and it was so much better with the former jerks...They all need the boot!
I agree! We should be voting out ALL INCUMBENTS, regardless of party affiliation, every time, unless they are actively fighting to end corporate campaign financing and corporate sponsored lobbying that allows the legalized bribery of our politicians. Until this bribery is stopped, the American people will get no representation. And doing it is in the interest of all Americans, conservative, moderate, or liberal.

Better yet we the people need to get behind the Article 5 convention of states for new constitutional amendments mainly term limits & a balanced budget amendment. America cannot keep spending money it does not have and the founders put Article 5 into the constitution because they must have known that the government could get self serving, not willing to do the right thing, and need to be reigned in by the people of the states. Right now, the states are just as corrupt as the fed because they follow the same process of legalized bribery. Even many local governments are corrupted by it.

I don't think you realize how serious this is. You're too focussed on your own hyper-conservative issues, and getting your own way. Right now NONE of us are being represented by our own government. Not just you hyper-conservatives. And if there is any hope of our regaining control, we have to do it en masse, and do it for everyone. We're going to have to set our particular desires aside, and focus purely on regaining representation. THEN we can debate our specific issues. Right now all those issues do is divide us, distract us, and keep us hopelessly weak and ineffective.

The convention is not a conservative issue or a liberal issue it is an American issue, and balancing the budget, forcing the government to live within it's means will force all these issues to the top. It will become a discussion of wants & needs and stopping government from going into debt to force conservative or liberal issues. The nation is broke & broken and if we the people of the states don't change the paradigm in Washington D.C. from the state level, from the grassroots level it will never happen, that is the whole reason to hold a convention, to do the things Washington incumbents will not do on their own outside of cutting them off from borrowing & spending. You are correct it is serious but, it starts with us understanding that government is putting our kids into insurmountable debt

The debt is not the main issue, legalized corruption is. The debt is just another symptom of that corruption. Addressing the symptoms is like playing 'whack-a-mole'. As long as the corruption remains, the symptoms will be endless, and we'll keep fighting amongst ourselves about which ones matter more.

We need to address the PROBLEM, not the symptoms. And the problem is wholesale corruption by a very wealthy elite, through horrible campaign finance practices and the legalized bribery being carried out by ex-legislators turned "lobbyists". Until we stop this corruption we will get no representation in the decision-making our own government, as it's for sale to the highest bribe. And those paying the bribes do not have the American people's interests on their agenda.

Which will be addressed through term limits & a balanced budget amendments. You have to break up the cartel to break up the corruption and these two issues work hand in hand.

We don't want term limits if we can get people in there who will do a good job. We want proper representation: of the people, and chosen by the people. And I don't care about the budget. The budget is not a significant issue. It's a deliberate distraction being used to turn everyone against everyone else, based on our innate personal greed.
