Maybe you can't, but others (both news providers and news consumers) are able to follow multiple stories at once.

nobody cares about the children anna

nobody ever has

it was advantageous for the left to pretend they cared about the children, in order to chase after trump

right now they're too busy pretending they care about trump and putin, in order to chase after trump

next month it will be something else

You're projecting. Just because you didn't care doesn't mean other people didn't.

They actually went to work to advocate for them, and made things happen - unlike the brain-dead Trumpers who were happy to see families being punished for seeking asylum.

GOP Senators Begin To Push Back On Trump’s Migrant Family Separations

Republicans on Capitol Hill have remained largely silent as the Trump administration has forcibly separated thousands of immigrant families, and many have voiced support for the “zero tolerance” policy. Comprehensive immigration reform bills that would have addressed the separations have repeatedly failed in both chambers, while standalone bills introduced in Congress this week to reunite immigrant families and improve conditions in immigration detention have zero Republican co-sponsors. No GOP committee chair has convened a single hearing focused solely on the crisis.

But on Friday, 10 GOP senators signed onto a letter with their Democratic colleagues urging the Trump administration to “use all available resources currently at its disposal to reunite families as soon as possible.”

“From this point forward, the default position of the United States of America is to keep families together,” the bipartisan letter states. “Enforcement of our immigration laws should be a high priority, but we must also adhere to our core moral values as Americans.”

Nobody punished those families. They punished themselves. If they seek asylum, they simply go to a port of entry and apply. Maybe they were ignorant of this rule? Or maybe underhanded people with an agenda persuaded them to enter illlegally and told them they would face no harmful consequences. Those are the real punishers.

What's as bad as Trump's legacy is the base legacy of his supporters and the spineless cowardice of the GOP.

Anna,
I will be interested if you find out why Donald Trump seems able to raise tariffs on China and Europe, not to mention Mexico and Canada?

This raising tariffs on other countries used to need the approval of congress! If the Republicans are going to allow this to continue, then I hope a big heard of Democrats come into the House and Senate, and then I hope they do something to stop the President from acting like a totalitarian leader. Someone has to put a chain on this man!

He's using his executive powers, and Congress can't stop him except by passing a measure (with a veto-proof majority) to take back those executive powers over tariffs.

Over the years, more and more power over tariffs has shifted to the executive branch. I agree the power needs to go back to Congress.

We can only hope. And vote.

He is essentially abusing the hell out of an exception Congress granted the President to set tariffs IF it is an issue of national security. It was intended to allow the President to act quickly if a resource essential to the national defense is threatened.

Then pass a law restricting his tariff abilities. They won't.

Once the Trump Administration is allowed to comtinue down that "slippery slope" of justifying separating children from their parents as a tactic, what group will be targeted next - based on the conservative rational that "the ends justify the means!"

More Evidence Emerges That Trump Intended for Family Separation to Be Permanent

Last month, Dahlia Lithwick argued in Slate that the government seemed to have intended its unlawful family separation policy to be permanent. On Wednesday, we got further evidence of that.

In the case of Ms. L v. ICE, Judge Dana Sabraw ruled that child separation was a violation of the due process clause of the Constitution, ordered it be brought to an end, and that the already separated families be reunitled. The government has yet to challenge this ruling and those reunifications are currently underway.

The ad hoc procedures the government has created to respond to this judicial decree have offered proof that it never intended for families to be brought back together. On Wednesday, Democratic members of the House Judiciary presented further such evidence. Ranking member Jerrold Nadler—along with Reps. Elijah Cummings and Bennie Thompson—released a joint statement saying that the Trump administration told them there had been no plan to reunite the children prior to the judicial order by Judge Sabraw last month.

“[During a Wednesday meeting], Trump Administration officials made a startling confession—they had no interagency plan in place to reunite children with their parents when Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced President Trump’s ‘zero tolerance’ policy in April,” the trio of Congressmen announced on Thursday. “Even if they believed their new policy was the right one, how could they have been so heartless not to have planned to reunite these children with their parents?”

This is a question that should haunt this country for years: Did our government plan to make effective orphans of thousands of children who came here with loving parents?

Again, the plain answer seems to be: “Yes.”

Here’s what happened when the Democratic Congressmen raised the issue with Commander Jonathan White, the Deputy Director for Children Services, Administration for Children and Families at the Office of Refugee Resettlement.

[W]hen asked whether a reunification plan was in place on April 6, 2018, Commander White answered: “There was not at that time a specialized plan.” Commander White acknowledged that the Trump Administration began more detailed planning for reunifications only when forced to do so by court order.

It's not a "claim" it's a statement of fact. Few of us are descendents of original peoples here.

Same with France and Spain, they were populated by Celtic people and the Franks were a Germanic tribal group. True with many nations; we are most singled out because we are such a young nation.

We have to stop that, or call the president King!

How is china selling good for less threatening the national security? This is so goofy, it should not be taken seriously.

It isn't which is why I say he is abusing the hell out of it. He has found a loophole that is allowing him to steal the power to set tariffs from the Congress and the Congress is sitting back and letting him do it.
