Americans are angry, and it has a lot to do with Trump's success. This has been somewhat established. People want a president who will stop playing along with political correctness and not doing anything that might offend someone else.
They have been offended and yet rationalized to over and over that they aren't or, in some cases, to simply deal with it- and that has escalated frustration.
I've been saying for years to stop treading on that, but people, especially Leftists, have grown so arrogant that they think they are immune to push back.

Because, we're near the bottom of that slippery slope.
Instead of the nonstop stream of insults and boycotting of debates, Bernie and Hillary actually found time to debate the issues.
As for Trump, he was a Democrat for most of his adult life - now its your turn!
Conservatives would have America slide back into its "glorious" past - a past whose "glories" (Make America Great Again), for the most part, are figments of their imagination!

Insightful article. Stats show a polarization I was not aware of.
In addition to being perpetually angry, conservatives see a conspiracy behind every tree and a terrorist under every bed!
It should be perfectly obvious by now that Trump's ego would preclude him from working for anybody but himself!
It was the " being tough in "Afghanistan and Iranian, financed with "borrowed
" money, that was responsible for many of America's political, social and economic woes!
Other modern democracies choose to be "less feared" and invest their resources to improve the lives of their people - universal healthcare, free university/college tuition, social programs.
Being the "toughest" in this world comes with a high price-tag, doesn't buy happiness and creates a false sense of security!
