What song will they play at your funeral?

…The most popular song played at a funeral is "My Way" by Frank Sinatra. What would you have played at your funeral should you die today?...

Of the popular choices listed, I would prefer "Spirit In The Sky" and “Highway To Hell."

I would add:

“Iron Man” and “War Pigs” by Black Sabbath
“Smoke on the Water” instrumental by a Japanese symphony orchestra I found on YouTube.
“Golden Shower of Hits” by The Circle Jerks
“Killing for Jesus” by Bad Religion

In no particular order.

Where We'll Never Grow Old

I have heard of a land on the far away strand
'Tis a beautiful home of the soul
Built by Jesus on high, there we never shall die
'Tis a land where we never grow old

In that beautiful home where we'll never more roam
We shall be in the sweet by and by
Happy praise to the king thru eternity sing
'Tis a land where we never shall die

When our work here is done and the life crown is won
And out troubles and trials are o'er
All our sorrows will end and our voices will blend
With the loved ones who've gone on before

Never grow old, never grow old
In a land where we'll never grow old
Never grow old, never grow old
In a land where we'll never grow old

Zion’s Hill

There waits for me a glad tomorrow,
Where gates of pearl swing open wide,
And when I've passed this vale of sorrow,
I'll dwell upon the other side.

Some day I'll hear the angels singing,
Beyond the shadows of the tomb;
And all the bells of heaven ringing,
While saints are singing, "Home, sweet home."

Some day my labors will be ended,
And all my wand'rings will be o'er,
And all earth's broken ties be mended,
And I shall sigh and weep no more.

Some day the dark clouds will be rifted,
And all the night of gloom be past;
And all life's burdens will be lifted,
The day of rest shall dawn at last.

Some day beyond the reach of mortal kin,
Some day God only knows just where and when
The wheels of mortal life shall all stand still
And I shall go to dwell on Zion's hill.

Face to Face

Face to face with Christ, my Savior,
Face to face - what will it be,
When with rapture I behold Him,
Jesus Christ Who died for me?

Only faintly now I see Him,
With the darkened veil between,
But a blessed day is coming,
When His glory shall be seen.

What rejoicing in His presence,
When are banished grief and pain;
When the crooked ways are straightened,
And the dark things shall be plain.

Face to face - oh, blissful moment!
Face to face - to see and know;
Face to face with my Redeemer,
Jesus Christ Who loves me so.

Face to face I shall behold Him,
Far beyond the starry sky;
Face to face in all His glory,
I shall see Him by and by!

Serenaded By Angels

She went to sleep one night
Never to awake again
But everything was all right
Between her and the Lord
She awoke in Heaven's courtyard
Free from pain within
The angels gathered around her
And took her by the hand

Now I close my eyes at night
And try to imagine
That city of brilliant light
Waiting for me
But my mind cannot conceive
So I'll continue to dream
Till I'm transported there
Then I will be

Serenaded by angels, up to the throne
Serenaded by angels, finally at home
Surrounded by praises, to the King
Welcome to Paradise, the angels did sing

Where The Roses Never Fade

I am going to a city where the streets with gold are laid
Where the tree of life is blooming and the roses never fade
Here they bloom but for a season soon their beauty is decayed
I am going to a city where the roses never fade

Loved ones gone to be with Jesus, there in robes of white arrayed
They are waiting for my coming where the roses never fade
Here they bloom but for a season soon their beauty is decayed
I am going to a city where the roses never fade

Where the roses never fade

Beautiful Isle of Somewhere

Somewhere the sun is shining,
Somewhere the songbirds dwell;
Hush, then, thy sad repining,
God lives, and all is well.

Somewhere the day is longer,
Somewhere the task is done;
Somewhere the heart is stronger,
Somewhere the guerdon won.

Somewhere the load is lifted,
Close by an open door;
Somewhere the clouds are rifted,
Somewhere the angels sing.

Somewhere, somewhere,
Beautiful Isle of Somewhere!
Land of the true, where we live anew,
Beautiful Isle of Somewhere!

TH got my idea first. But I thought "Ding Dong the witch is dead" (the Naked Gun version) would get people in the right frame of mind. Probably should change it to "...the warlock is dead", though.

This is the hymn that Psalmist and Mrs Psalmist would pick together . . .

Abide With Me

Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide.
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day;
Earth’s joys grow dim; its glories pass away;
Change and decay in all around I see;
O Thou who changest not, abide with me.

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.
Where is death’s sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.
Heaven’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee;
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

PfR-Life Goes On

The sun will shine
I'll smile from time to time
And sin the song
Cause life goes on

(chorus)
But it won't mean a thing
Without you and the love you bring
It won't mean a thing
Without you

The wounds will heal
Starting over ain't no big deal
The rebuilt Rome
And life goes on

(chorus)

The lesson learned
We all must take our turn
And carry on
Cause life goes on

(chorus 2x)

Hmm. Well I don't want a formal funeral--a nice party would be better; a good, boisterous Irish wake, like my grandfather's, would be ideal--but I suppose if there was going to be a song to set the scene it would be "Battle Without Honor or Humility," just to freak everybody out, followed by Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor," to continue the show. Oh, and after that probably the Peter Gunn theme, as the gentlemen led the way to the house and my wet bar.

Knight I like this one too:

I think I might choose a hymn, possibly "in the Garden"

In The Garden
I come to the garden alone,
while the dew is still on the roses.
And the voice I hear, falling on my ear,
the Son of God discloses.

Chorus:
And He walks with me,
and He talks with me,
and He tells me I am His own;
and the joy we share as we tarry there,
none other has ever known.

Verse 2:
He speaks and the sound of His voice,
is so sweet the birds hush their singing,
and the melody that He gave to me
within my heart is ringing.

Chorus

Verse 3:
I`d stay in the garden with Himm
though the night around me be falling,
but He bids me go; through the voice of woe
His voice to me is calling.

Chorus

I don't know about mine...I love hymns, so those are good...but at my father-in-law's funeral last week, a close friend of the family put together a video of photos with this song playing:
"It's Hard to be Humble"
Oh Lord it's hard to be humble
when you're perfect in every way.
I can't wait to look in the mirror
cause I get better loking each day.
To know me is to love me
I must be a h*** of a man.
Oh Lord it's hard to be humble
but I'm doing the best that I can.
I used to have a girlfriend
but she just couldn't compete
with all of these love starved women
who keep clamoring at my feet.
Well I prob'ly could find me another
but I guess they're all in awe of me.
Who cares, I never get lonesome
cause I treasure my own company.
Oh Lord it's hard to be humble
when you're perfect in every way,
I can't wait to look in the mirror
cause I get better looking each day
To know me is to love me
I must be a h*** of a man.
Oh Lord it's hard to be humble
but I'm doing the best that I can.
I guess you could say I'm a loner,
a cowboy outlaw tough and proud.
I could have lots of friends if I want to
but then I wouldn't stand out from the crowd.
Some folks say that I'm egotistical.
I don't even know what that means.
I guess it has something to do with the way that I
fill out my skin tight blue jeans.
Oh Lord it's hard to be humble
when you're perfect in every way,
I can't wait to look in the mirror
cause I get better looking each day
To know me is to love me
I must be a h*** of a man.
Oh Lord it's hard to be humble
but I'm doing the best that I can.
We're doing the best that we can

It was funny, because my father-in-law was quite a character and used to sing that song all the time.

The video also had one of my favorite Johnny Cash songs - "If I Were a Carpenter" when it showed pictures of my father-in-law and mother-in-law together.

Then they played "In the Garden".

My sister chose the Alison Kraus & Robert Plant song Your Long Journey for my brother-in-law's funeral 6 weeks ago.

Your Long Journey

God's given us years of happiness here
Now we must part
And as the angels come and call for you
The pains of grief tug at my heart

Oh my darling
My darling
My heart breaks as you take your long journey
Oh the days will be empty
The nights so long without you my love
And when god calls for you I'm left alone
But we will meet in heaven above

Oh my darling
My darling
My heart breaks as you take your long journey
Fond memories I'll keep of happy ways
That on earth we trod
And when I come we will walk hand in hand
As one in heaven in the family of god

Oh my darling
My darling
My heart breaks as you take your long journey

My mom's memorial service, December 2000

My mom's memorial service, December 2000

I officiated my mom's memorial service, and Jeff my son-in-law sang "If You Could See Me Now"
for her service.

My brief message text was
Psalm 71:9, Isaiah 35:6, Revelation 21:4

—<>—

"If You Could See Me Now"

Our prayers have all been answered;
I’ve finally arrived;
The healing that had been delayed;
Has now been realized.
No one’s in a hurry;
There’s no schedule to keep;
We’re all enjoying Jesus;
Just sitting at His feet.

My light and temporary trials;
Have worked out for my good.
To know it brought Him glory;
When I misunderstood.
Though we’ve had our sorrows;
They can never compare;
What Jesus has in store for us;
No language can share.

If you could see me now;
I’m walking streets of gold.
If you could see me now;
I’m standing tall and whole.

If you could see me now;
You’d know I’d seen His face.
If you could see me now,
You’d know the pain’s erased.

You wouldn’t want me to ever leave
this perfect place.
If you could only see me now.
If you could see me now.
If you could only see me now.
