I am more of a fan of knitting and crochet, but sewing is a handy skill for a guy to have as well

It's easy to start! I think hemming things is good practice, also. ^_^

And if you get just a nice square piece of cloth you can just run stitches across it and learn all the settings on your machine, and practice going backwards and such (going backwards will be very useful.)
