The only reason it sounds like they "focus" on harshness is because very few Christians are willing to stick out their necks and preach those things which are unpopular. Nearly every church I've attended you hear the same thing over and over, "God loves you", "Jesus loves the whole world", and things of that nature while you NEVER hear anything taught about rebuking, confronting, judging, etc... Those things are not PC in "modern" Christianity, therefore preachers preach what the people love to hear.
Paul told the Christians at Corinth NOT to have fellowship with fornicators. How many people obey this simple instruction? It's pretty evident that most churches are more interested in keeping their members content rather than preach all of the Word.
