(CNN)A man wielding a machete stormed a restaurant in Columbus, Ohio, and attacked several people before he was killed by police, authorities said Thursday.

The suspect was the only one killed. Nobody inside the Nazareth restaurant and deli said they knew him, according to police.

"(He) immediately began swinging a machete at customers and employees inside," Columbus police Sgt. Rich Weiner said. "There was no rhyme or reason as to who he was going after as soon as he walked in, according to some of the witnesses."

Police have tentatively identified the suspect but would not reveal his name or age.

"Right now there's nothing that leads us to believe that this is anything but just a random attack," Weiner said.

Karen Bass was inside the restaurant when it all happened.

"He came through the front door and then started just systematically hitting people," she told CNN affiliate WSYX. "I thought it was a personal thing, and then he just started down the row hitting everybody."

Four people were injured and transported to the hospital.

One victim who was in critical condition underwent surgery and is now "stable," Weiner said.

The chase

The suspect was seen 30 to 45 minutes earlier entering the restaurant and speaking with an employee. Police would not discuss details of that conversation.

He left, came back at around 6 p.m. and then attacked a man and woman at a booth just inside the door, Weiner said.

Two men immediately ran out and called 911 while another engaged in a "physical altercation" with the suspect. Some patrons started throwing chairs.

An employee then "grabbed something from behind the register" and stopped the attack, according to Weiner.

"There's blood all over inside the restaurant," Steven Bass, Karen's husband, told WSYX.

Witnesses were able to give authorities enough information about the suspect's vehicle that another officer spotted it soon after, and a chase began.

Once authorities were able to get the suspect off the road, he tried to exit from the passenger side of the vehicle and an officer unsuccessfully tried to use a stun gun on him, Weiner said.

The suspect eventually made it out of the vehicle with a machete and another knife in hand.

Then, "he lunged across the hood at the officers," Weiner said. "Another officer in a cruiser fired a couple shots at him and put him down."

The FBI is helping local police with the investigation, which includes trying to determine the attacker's motive, a U.S. law enforcement official said on condition of anonymity.

A little information on the location:

The name of the popular Middle Eastern restaurant where the murderous machete attack took place is Nazareth — the childhood home of Jesus. The owner is an “outspoken Christian” from Israel.

Inside Machete-Wielding Man's Terrifying Attack at Ohio Restaurant

The incident is being investigated by the Critical Incident Response Team, police said, and the final investigative package will be forwarded to the Columbus Division of Police Firearms/Police-Involved Death Review Board and the Chain-Of-Command for review.

The FBI is investigating the suspect's motive, Columbus Police Chief Kim Jacobs said at a news conference this afternoon, adding that the motive is not yet clear.

Barry had a Columbus address, but police do not yet know where he is from, Jacobs said.

A video on that page is reporting they are trying to determine if its terrorism, but keep maintaining, no clear motive is known.

This article isnt going with the no motive thing and states that the attacker was a muslim man named Mohamed Barry.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Police shot and killed a man who stormed into a central Ohio restaurant wielding a machete and randomly attacking people as they sat unsuspectingly at their dinner tables, authorities said.
Four people were injured in the brutal attack Thursday evening at Nazareth Restaurant and Deli, a Mediterranean restaurant in Columbus.

The victims were taken to an area hospital and were expected to recover.

Police identified the suspected attacker as Mohamed Barry, 30.

CBS News homeland security correspondent Jeff Pegues reports that investigators were running down leads to try to determine if the attack was somehow tied to terrorist organizations.

"There was no rhyme or reason as to who he was going after," said Columbus police Sgt. Rich Weiner.

Police said the man walked into the restaurant, had a conversation with an employee and then left. He returned about a half hour later. That's when police said he approached a man and a woman who were sitting just inside the door at a booth and started the attack.

Pegues reports the suspected attacker has a Somali background, and officials believe he may have traveled to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates in 2012. Pegues reports that law enforcement is concerned that this incident has the hallmarks of the type of so-called "lone wolf" terrorist attack that they have been working to stop.

Police said employees and patrons tried to get the man to stop.

"Some of the patrons there started throwing chairs at him just trying to get him out of there," Weiner said.

The man eventually fled the scene in a white car and led police on a short chase. Officers forced the man off the road a few miles away and when he got out of his car police said they tried unsuccessfully to use a stun gun on him.

Weiner said, "At that point he had a machete and another knife in his hand and he lunged across the hood at the officers."

That's when police said an officer shot and killed the man.

It remained unclear what sparked the attacks.

"Right now there's nothing that leads us to believe that this is anything but a random attack," said Weiner.

Police said four people were treated at Grant Medical Center. William Foley, 54, was in critical but stable condition. Gerald Russell and Debbie Russell, both 43, were in stable condition. Neil McMeekin, 43, was treated and released.

Karen Bass, who told CBS affiliate WBNS-10TV that she had only been in the restaurant for about half an hour when the attack occurred, described a scene of chaos.

"He came to each table and just started hitting them," she told WBNS. "There were tables and chairs overturned, there was a man on the floor bleeding, there was blood on the floor."

"I fell like five times. My legs felt like jelly. I just thought he was going to come behind me and slash me up," she said, describing her frantic escape.

Well, who could have guessed it was a muslim.

I see no reason to assume this had anything to do with Islam, racists.

A curious tactic from someone who rushed into the Vegas sidewalk driver with unsupported Muslim terrorist allegations then faded as the facts came out like ice cream outdoors in August down here.

Maybe that's not a brick you want to throw. Especially when the target can't answer you.

They traffick fear, and bloody, swordy incidents are the way to do that. They dislike Israel.

Why can't Obama and DOJ and all realize: Islamic attackers and terrorists do not "twist" the Qur'an. They get it from surah 9, from fatwas, from Hadiths, from the concept of naqzic in their theology. Their currency is theocracy; ours in the west is pluralism: you can't force someone to believe the sha'adah. But we have had to resist their theocracy ever since the Ambassador of Tripoli explained to Pres. Jefferson that the piracy was based on the sha'adah.

It is not complicated, nor is it 'racist,' which was a mutation introduced by an Islamic follower about 30 years ago while working at the SF Chronicle, and noticing the number of divergent groups who were getting 'tolerance' by calling themselves some other category than they really were. Today, the categories are gone.

Patrick O'Toole is a journalist at PJ Media. He was on Sandy Rios this morning and I caught just a little of his background. Apparently, he was involved (several years ago) in warning the Columbus dept. (not sure if it was an FBI branch or the local PD but it was in the presence of Homeland Security and the FBI) about this specific incident being (at that time) a serious concern. He was sued because he had the temerity to link radical Islam with terrorism. Four years on, he won the suit but had been gagged because of the legal proceedings. Now he sees this and in the middle of a climate where people are more afraid of being politically insensitive than of reporting potential terrorism. This incident is being investigated for possibly being terrorism....
