Virginia was one of the last states to have a unmarried cohabitation law which was made null merely five years ago. Albeit, it was a forgotten law anyway.
The point is- it's nothing new, and the excuses are stupid- they did it for all that time, and the only real reason you don't want it is because it is inconvenient.

It was illegal and highly frowned upon by society until the US got 'civilized' back in the early 1970's.
After becoming 'civilized', non-marriage cohabitation brought wonderful things to society (wonderful if you're a secular humanist like the people joking about it in this thread are) like abortion on demand.

If the female cohabitant decided to keep the baby, off the male cohabitant went because he wasn't ready for that commitment (hence children from non-marital cohabitation were raised in single parent homes).

As someone whose 2 sons cohabitated for several years before they bought houses with their SO and then got married to them and a daughter who lives happily with her SO. Too bad, sorry it offends you, but deal with it, not going away. Try not to be so frightened.
