Yes, but you need to bear in mind that that's a very American mentality. People in countries like Australia and England just don't associate having a gun with personal safety. Over here, the only people who have handguns are really hardcore criminals (you don't even see minor crims with guns) or professional shooters. Farmers usually have a single rifle that's kept locked up and taken out on rare occasions.
