Deputy killed in Minnesota after hospitalized suspect grabs his gun

A deputy was shot dead at a Minnesota hospital Sunday after the suspect he was guarding grabbed his gun and opened fire.

Aitkin County Sheriff's Investigator Steven Sandberg, 60, died during an altercation at St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota, state officials said in a statement.

The man he was guarding, 50-year-old Danny Hammond, had been receiving medical care at the hospital after a domestic dispute, CNN affiliate WCCO reported.

Around 5:15 a.m. Sunday, the suspect "gained control of Sandberg's gun and shot him," the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said.

Hammond also died at the hospital after a security guard used a Taser to subdue him. Officials said the suspect "experienced a medical emergency" after he was Tasered.

Sandberg had worked for the Sheriff's Office for 24 years, officials said. He is survived by his wife and daughter, Aitkin County Sheriff Scott Turner told reporters.

After the deadly shooting, a solemn convoy of police vehicles escorted his body to the medical examiner's office, where investigators will conduct an autopsy, WCCO reported.

Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton expressed condolences to Sandberg's family in a statement Sunday, calling his death a "terrible, senseless murder."

"This tragedy reminds us that Minnesota's law enforcement officers risk their lives every day and night to keep us safe," he said.

i suspect granite, the coward, will avoid this one like the plague

Most extreme liberals would avoid it, they would only jump in it, if the deputy killed the suspect who tried to get it. Then they would call the dead cop a murderer.

That is a tragic story. I know hindsight is perfect but they really should strap/confine ANY criminal or suspected criminal restrained to the bed. I don't work at a hospital, but I have seen the beds with straps.

If a person is considered dangerous enough for an armed officer to guard, they should protect staff and the public from criminals like this. His door should be locked and he should have strapped down.

Right, because that would be such a reasonable take-away. It is a pity the officer was armed, but that was presumably standard practice. Ideally, people handling the prisoner in a medical context would be unarmed, or at least only armed with less lethal weapons. That said, it wouldn't surprise me if there were some lapse in safety policy here.

Wow nice try to still blame the cop!

It is murder, execute him. And it is too late, but he had no business in law enforcement.

"The Cop deserved it!" - Patrick Jane, Granite and the rest.

Because I said the criminal should be strapped down ? Yeah, that means I said the cop deserved it. You put it in quotes, can you show the link to quote that from anybody ? Nope, not me anyway. I should report you :rotfl:

I just think it is more than common sense that if a criminal needs an armed guard he should be handcuffed or somehow restrained awaiting incarceration. If anything I blame the hospital procedures.

It wasn't this thread I was referring to. :)

I still never said that. I said the officer is trained to de-escalate situations and he should have. I also said the shooting is justifiable but the cop's actions precluding that were not.

Take that and twist it however you want, but the cop messed up. Anytime you end your shift after taking a 17 year old boy's life, you did something wrong.

The cop didn't mess up. The kid messed up, and fact that you don't know it says a lot about you. Now, you're doing what that idiot boy did....totally disrespecting authority. Nothing like calling evil good and good evil...not being able to recognize right from wrong is why we're in the shape we are today in this country.

the part you highlighted is directed to everyone, not specifically Knight. Fact is, he put quotes around the phrase "cop deserved it" and attributed it to me and granite. I never said that so something got twisted somewhere. In the meantime, grow up finally.

"Take that and twist it however you want" is directed to everyone? Do you really think you can get away with saying that? You've got some nerve, I'll give you that.

What you need to do is stop trying to wiggle your way out of what you say. The only twisting that's going on is you squirming once again. You even had to quote it twice because once is never enough for you. You'll probably carry this one for four or five more posts....probably even more than that. You'll probably create another thread about it. And you tell me to grow up? :chuckle:

Do folks get away with quoting something a person didn't say. now take that and twist it however you want.
