Mr. Cunha is a member of the Evangelical Church Assembly of God - Madureira Ministry. According to Brazilian newspaper "O Estado de S.Paulo, attorney general Rodrigo Janot accuses Cunha of designating the church to receive part of a bribe of at least US$ 5 million destined to him referring to contracts to enable the construction of two drillships used by Petrobras (the Brazilian oil company).
According to the complaint against Mr. Cunha, lobyist Júlio Camargo was sought in 2012 by Fernando Soares, who operated the bribe for Mr. Cunha's party in Petrobras, and said he "should make the payment of these amounts to the Evangelical Church Assembly of God". The name of the church on the record of the Brazilian equivalent of the IRS matches the Evangelical Church Assembly of God, Madureira Ministry, in the city of Campinas, in the State of São Paulo.
According to Fernando Soares, people from this church would get in touch with the witness, which really happened. Since then, two transfers were made in August, 2012, from Júlio Camargo's companies, Piemonte and Treviso, worth R$ 125.000 each, to a temple of the Assembly of God, Madureira Ministry, in Campinas, both with the false justification of paying providers.
The attorney general says "there are no doubts that such transfers were made by Eduardo Cunha's designation for the payment of part of the residual value of the bribe referring to the drillships". The complaint also highlights that Júlio Camargo was never a member of the evangelical church and that he is Catholic, besides never having made donations to the Assembly of God before this episode.
