Trump's Election an Echo, Not Foreshadowing

I have a lot of faith in the future generations. If democracy holds, and the republic holds together, I think the reversal is inevitably short-lived, although Republicans can do a lot of damage while they are in power. It could even be a good chance to clean house in the Democratic party. What worries me in the long run is the resemblance between Trump and a fascist strongmen, and the seeming trend toward fascism worldwide, organized by Russia in a lot of cases, and the potential for the Constitutional order to be overturned or corrupted. In the short term, I really think there are some groups of people who are at some level of threat, and I don't think I'm entitled to sit back and wait for a projected inevitable better world.

I know what I think of Trump as a person, but I'm not sure what that will mean for the office. We've had any number of presidents with questionable to little character. Some of them were good for the country anyway. One of the most politically corrupt rascals we've seen in the office was also responsible for some of the most important civil rights legislation in our nation's history.

Trump is a number of odious, regrettable things. He's also very smart and extremely driven. If he puts the right people in place around him and Congress forces a measure of restraint...I'm trying to be optimistic.

Meanwhile, it's time to get to know the people surrounding our next president, beginning with:

Reince Priebus, Chief of Staff: a college Republican, *** laude graduate of the University of Wisconsin. Went to law school in Miami, where he interned with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. He graduated, again *** laude, in 1998 and by 2006 had made partner in a legal firm in Wisconsin while attracting a good bit of positive attention by the Bar. After a losing bid for the state senate he won election as head of the Republican Party in Wisconsin in 2007. He was by any measure a success at the job, handling the difficult task of making the Tea Party and traditional Republicans work together. In 2011 he was elected Chairman of the Republican National Committee, where he won an unprecedented three terms.

He stressed party first in the wake of Trump's nomination and worked hard to keep the party from splintering. He also isn't above speaking his mind in opposition, taking public exception to Trump on more than one occasion, while remaining focused on the goal of electing the nominee.

Smart, capable and experienced at unifying somewhat disparate notions and agendas. One of the best Trump moves so far.

Sending Trump to Washington was like throwing a brick thru a window. Don't focus on the brick, the brick is not the message, it was handy and did the job.

Consumer confidence, 8 days after the Election the Wapo Poll shows 59% of Americans are confident the economy will improve under Trump.

On a side note, 99% of TOL members think Town Heretic is an imbecile. He is in the 1%

Sorry, apparently CC is so set on trolling that he can't be bothered with issues.

Again: on Mike Pence.

His response to being called out at the end of the Hamilton production was gracious. Unlike Trump, who decided the production was overrated and called for an apology, Pence stayed to hear the narration aimed at him and was complimentary of the production. Additionally, when he and his daughter were greeted by boos from some quarters he said to her, "That's what freedom sounds like."

I might not agree with him half the time, but I like the quality of that.

Also, I don't think a patron of a theater event should be singled out for public address unless he's behaving badly, as was the case with a Trump supporter in Chicago who had to be escorted from a production after making catcalls and while apparently inebriated. If Bernie goes into Chick fil A for a sandwich it shouldn't mean a conservative manager has the right to call out his politics. Just give the man his sandwich. Similarly, just let the man enjoy a play.

I think it's going to turn out a little more like throwing a brick straight up in the air. But there is a certain satisfaction in throwing something.

This put to mind the broken clock proverb.

I completely understand your impulse, but it really doesn't follow given the demographics of the two parties.

Two party theatrics that work as one deception to keep the dialectic thriving among the audience who take this Corporate BS as being a honest form of Governance, great orator but lacking in common sense.

A pat, prepared answer only tangentially related to the statement it would be expected to address? When are you running for office?

If you're 80% liberal and 20% conservative, you are a liberal.
The 'moderate' thing is most often used frankly to sit on the fence and pea shoot.
