The principle of meaning of our lives to live by.
Easy.
The 10 words or sayings are merely descriptions of what it is like where He is...
As it was before the fall...and certainly how things will be after the restoration...
Where He is there is none of the following: images killing stealing adultery deception dishonor of hierarchy and coveting...
but there is a Sabbath His name and One God...see? Just like Eden...and how it will be when as we pray it is indeed on earth as it is in heaven...His will being done

To show men their guilt in the eyes of God.
And, to lead them Jesus Christ for His Mercy and Grace.
The purpose of the commandments is for people to develop God's character.
That the commandments were revealed because of sin...do you think they did not exist prior?
