The Los Angeles City Council passed a resolution condemning Singapore for being barbaric [for flogging American teenager Michael Fay for vandalism]. Well, we looked at the murder statistics for Los Angeles and Singapore for the previous year. In the previous year Singapore had about, I think it was 23 murders. And it's the same population as L.A. about. It's equivalent. Los Angeles had over 1000 murders that year. A thousand murders in L.A., 23 in Singapore and the Los Angeles liberals had the nerved to call Singapore "barbaric."

Liberals say the death penalty doesn't deter murder and crime. We had the death penalty in America and then in the late 1960's it was said to be unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court. And so it was prohibited nation-wide. And in less than 10 years our murder rate at that time had been about 6000 murders per year. And by the time the death penalty was reinstated the murder rate had jumped to 16,000 per year.

It's not poverty that causes crime. That's what liberals say. And that's a real insult to poor people. It's a real insult to poor people to say poverty causes crime. In reality the opposite is way more a factor where crime causes poverty. Because in high crime areas businesses don't want to operate.
