  • Should TOL Consolidate Forums?

I assert that TOL has become too bloated over the years. There are too many forums.

    Maybe we should....

Combine "Newbie Central" and "Feedback Center"

    Keep "Politics"
    Keep "Religion"
    Keep "The Rest"
    Keep "Exclusively Christian Theology"

    Delete all of "Theology Club"

    Keep "Battle Royale Center Ring"
    Keep "The Grandstands

    Keep "Bob Enyart Live"

    Delete "Post of the Day
Delete "Subscribers Post of the Day"

Keep All Thread Archives and Woodshed

    Delete All Family Resource Center

    Delete Subscribers Private Club

We could move any important threads out of the deleted forums into other forums that would remain.

Most of the forums I would like to delete get little to no participation and just makes the forum look confusing to new users.

I would like to hear your opinions.

    "Politics" ---Keep
    "Religion" --- Keep
    "The Rest"---Keep
    "Exclusively Christian Theology" --- Keep

"Theology Club" --Delete. Activity here is low and the forum would actually attract more Christians from different back grounds of the forum didn't look as narrowly focused. Right now TOL is mostly Open view/MAD Christians versus all those cultists, which make a very small pool of Christian posters and a lot of non-Christian members joining.

"Battle Royale Center Ring" -- Keep
    "The Grandstands -- Keep

    "Bob Enyart Live" -- Keep

    "Post of the Day" ---Delete
"Subscribers Post of the Day" --- Delete

Keep All Thread Archives and Woodshed

    Delete All Family Resource Center

    Delete Subscribers Private Club

Combine "Newbie Central" and "Feedback Center" If feedback center is not as much used by the administrators, then yes.

      Keep "Politics"
      Keep "Religion"
      Keep "The Rest"
      Keep "Exclusively Christian Theology" Yes

Delete all of "Theology Club" Agree

Keep "Battle Royale Center Ring" Agree, yes too past tense
Keep "The Grandstands I would let it go, maybe keep threads in archive.

Keep "Bob Enyart Live" I do not use it much?

Delete "Post of the Day Agree, not current
Delete "Subscribers Post of the Day" Agree

Keep All Thread Archives and Woodshed

Delete All Family Resource Center Maybe keep this one, unless there is no action

Delete Subscribers Private Club I would keep the invited private club because it allows older members a place to check in with old friends.

We could move any important threads out of the deleted forums into other forums that would remain. OK

Most of the forums I would like to delete get little to no participation and just makes the forum look confusing to new users. Good reason

I would like to hear your opinions.
I agree with almost all of this, other than the invited private club, but that is because I use it most. Most members are naturally going to want what they enjoy most, not the big picture.
      So, what?

      believe it!

The problem with those forums is they present an exclusionary area which turns off people who are not on the "in".

Honestly if it were up to me I would have 3 forums....

            Religion
            Politics
            Other

I think that's what people really want.

I know, figured this might be of concern. I like it because it turns down the noise way low, not to exclude anyone of lessor merit. I like it because I know the potential respondents. If I were in a management, or owner position, I would have to consider more than my preferences.

Here are some ideas i thought about.
Have topic 1 new members, information and feedback all in one. Do away with “TOL Topic of the Day” and have politics, religion, Christian Religion, and ‘all the rest” I would remove “Theology Club” and “The Coliseum” including “The Back Alley” and “One on One”. Have one sub forum under “Awards and Honors” “Thread ARCHIVE and Hall of Fame Threads” Then blend “Answer Bank” with S***S main forum.

This has been unquestionably the best theology forum I have seen in the past 20 years, much because of your sensibility and good work; however I think that was because its unique membership when it began to catch on. I will agree with any decision you choose to make.

I say keep the family resource center, even if it's just to move it under another section.

I plan on using some of those resources once I have kids... And this is an easy place for me to find them, without having to search through a long list of browser bookmarks.

Maybe put everything BR/formal debate related forums under one big one, then break it down from there.

Moving threads doesn't affect links to specific threads/posts does it?

I agree. Perhaps we should get rid of the exclusionary status, and focus on Christians as a whole, not just one group of Christians. Or replace that with a private area for the moderators now that we are going to be having a group of active mods, so we can hash out things, and I can give instructions on how to use the mod tools.

I would be able to put up instructive threads in there in how the tool box works.

I do think, though, that we should keep the Woodshed viewable by subscribers (and TOL Staff too, obviously) only.

The only thing I oppose is the one I made red.
I sure do like having all that info together in one spot.

But I can live with whatever you decide.

We don't tell our children fairy tales so that they will know that monsters exist.
                            They already know monsters exist.
We tell our children fairy tales so that they will know that monsters can be killed.
