The ones at Walmart said they were .223. I know that 5.56 should feed but I've heard that 5.56 has more powder and one should use caution because the higher pressures might not sit well with a barrel rated for .223.

Is there any merit to that debate?

Here is how it actually works.

The .223 Remington Cartridge has
its unique specifications.

The .556 NATO specifications are different,
but not by a large margin.

The main difference is in the "length" of
the chamber. The NATO spec for the .556 is
actually .0034" longer than the .223 Rem. spec.

Since the allowable chamber length in the NATO
spec is about a .005" window, the upper limit of the
.223 Rem. spec overlaps the lower limit of the
allowable NATO chamber length spec.

So:

All .223 Rem ammo made to spec will
fire in a NATO chambered rifle.

All ammo made to the upper allowable NATO spec may
not work in the .223 Rem. chambers that
are at the lower allowable limit of the .223 Rem spec.,

They will be .001, to .002" too long to chamber.

NATO increased the length so that ammo made from
all over the world would have a better chance of functioning
in the NATO rifles. If a round is slightly short, it still goes
bang and runs the gun, if it is too long, it won't chamber and
the guns jams and or stops running.

The allowable pressure spec is slightly higher for NATO
than SAMMI allows for the .223 Rem. ammo, particularly
the ammo made for arctic warfare conditions.

You definitely DO NOT want a chrome lined barrel.

You want a barrel that has been salt bath nitrided.

The trade/marketing names for this process are,
'Melonite', 'Isonite', 'QPQ'.

The barrel will last much longer than chrome lining,
and not pick up copper fouling as fast.

Here is the gun you want from Buds...

http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/...id+Tactical+Evo+Rifle+30+1+223REM5.56NATO+16"

Thanks for the info, at least now I know what to look for. That one is a bit over $1000 and with a wife and four kids if I spent that much on a gun my wife would shoot me with it, or more likely bludgeon me to death with it so that she could return it in new condition. That's almost a mortgage payment.

Do you have a pick for a best Under $600 AR? Maybe one with a good upper and I could replace the lower as money allows? I can sneak things thru the budget in small increments. I see alot of parts being bandied about in the gun forums, it looks as though ARs have become a micro "build your own" hobby much like RC cars use to be and still are. The Gun you linked to says it has a forged lower receiver but the picture looks like a composite, it does state that the pics are stock pics and might not represent the actual product.

What is the story with getting a "stamp" when you build your own? I hear they take a long time to get? I'm not adverse to building my own from parts but I hate red tape.

So the take away is get one chambered for 5.56 then you don't worry if you take a mag of 223 cause that might be a little short at worst.

Conversely if it says .223 and you run 5.56 you might wind up with a round stuck that you need a pair of pliers to extract and that would suck for a range trip let alone a gunfight, that you're trying to do the "standard or metric?" thing in the middle of.

You know about the Hubble Space Telescope right?
They screwed up that measurement thing and had to take a whole new hooyah all the way up there.

So it looks like the models stamped 5.56 are a little more expensive than the ones marked .223?
What's the weight difference on the barrels?

That pretty much covers it. You want the better chamber (NATO) even at the higher cost if your life depended on it. The better chamber shoots at lower pressures making it more reliable and able to shoot those hotter rounds.

Sometimes you see it described backwards. The .223 is the high pressure chamber and more dangerous. But people will say the .223 ammo is lower pressure and safer. No, the ammo is loaded lower because the chamber has too much pressure.

I guess that reply should have included your question. The 5.56 chamber has lower and safer chambers. The .223 is elevated and as such needs the lower ammo to be safe.

An action of combat preventing the death of millions.

agreed - we were fighting a war of nations

As opposed to putting him in a monkey cage and lighting the petrol on fire.

certainly much more cowardly, but i suspect they believe they're achieving their aims

and until we take them seriously and declare total war on them, ala ww2, nothing will change

what intrigues me is the fact that they seem to be asking for just that

Sorry, you can't equate the rules of an entire religion accepted by everyone in the religion with a few wacko "Christian-inspired" lone wolves or groups. There is no Sharia law in the rules of Christianity.

Do you think that all Muslims practice Sharia? I can assure you that isn't true
