Why are so many Christians biblically illiterate?

"The Bible has become a moving target. One can strip it down, twist it, misread it, add to it, supplement it, and even overrule it, and, unfortunately, 95 percent of the congregation will not realize it.

Why? Because Americans no longer know the Bible. The evidence is overpowering that contemporary Christianity is Bible-ish, at best, and at worst, in some cases, Bible-less."

Who thinks he has the answer?

They do not like what the Bible says, so they go to a preacher to tell them nice stories.
the time will come when people will not listen to the true teaching but will find many more teachers who please them by saying the things they want to hear. 4 They will stop listening to the truth and will begin to follow false stories.

2 Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

2 Timothy 4:4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

Guaranteed, folk who don't like what the Bibles says, don't go to church to hear anyone.

Those are the people Paul was referring to in his warning in Romans 11.

When Romans 11:25 takes place, they will find themselves like unbelieving Israel found itself - cut off.

Unbelieving Israel only had "a form of Godliness;" that within "denied the power there of;" its' leaders having made a spoil of them.

Once, while speaking with someone who attended one of those Rick Warren type assemblies, when I mentioned the word "Calvary," he actually asked me "what's that?"

Nice guy, though; had the outer form down. Really sad.

Another time, someone was telling me about all the changes in their life that attending the assembly they had been attending for several years had resulted in.

So I asked them - 'if you were to die to day and God were to ask you "why should I let you into my Heaven;" ever thought of what you might say?'

This person humbly replied "gosh, that's a good question; I'm not sure I'd know how to answer that..."

You see that humility - that's the form of Godliness. An outer that in reality has no life inside. They've been taken captive by the tradition of men.

Other people over the years have had a similar response.

Invasion of THE BODY Snatchers BEFORE they ever had a chance to hear the gospel of our salvation that they too might be made a BODY Member by the Father in His Son through the Spirit by the hearing of His True Word.

People are too busy, they can't make the time in their schedule.

I know a lot of Bible believers that don't "go to church". There simply are no assemblies around who 2 Timothy 2:15 KJV. Most local assemblies are filled with the likes of these 2 Corinthians 11:13-15 KJV. And in those cases, we are to steer clear (2 Timothy 2:19 KJV).

There's no shortage of churches in St. Louis and surrounding areas and they all seem well attended. I don't go often, I prefer studying myself or on TOL. I've been to numerous churches here, and none preach 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 KJV -

What the cause is, as I have experienced it to a great degree, people love their lives the way they are. However, they want to believe for salvation at the same time. Redemption preached, without qualifying it, produces the message for such a people, i.e., From the pulpit: "Jesus did it all", "Your sins, past, present, and future, are all forgiven. Come to Jesus now!". When that is inculcated to such worldly minds 'believing' for Christ, finding the best church for being entertained is all that is left. Why else attend accept for the holiday turkey dinners and bingo games? The preaching through the years of redemption plus nothing has produced the religion of "humanism" which has corrupted every denomination. The church now exists only to make people happy.

I'm not quite sure this is the picture today. Those churches which are wide in appeal but shallow about challenging beliefs tend to have preaching which is ultra-practical. The sermon will use any bit of a verse to compete to be relevant and current. But year in year out, most of those listening would never realize that Christianity makes certain historic claims that 'arrest' most of what we think, so that we live in honor of Christ, connecting each moment to the historic reality.

The 2nd greatest feature of modern life is the socialist sexual culture begun by the Frankfurt school, in which sexual life is to be treated no differently than a need like hydration; that there are no morals to it on any level. See R. Kengor's TAKEDOWN. It gets into and through churches some how. 'It doesn't count' as they say. There is an exception; the 'sexception.' This is often true when the preaching at a church is asking for many manifestations of commitment and adherence. Go figure. But my point is that it is not merely a problem of a church offering 'redemption' and nothing. There are even legalistic churches that are a sexual mess; the legalism then comes across as a compensation for a sexual mess that no one wants to talk about.
