Phillips says the Know Nothings displayed three patterns common to all other nativist movements. First is the embrace of nationalism—as seen in the writings of the OSSB. Second is religious discrimination: in this case, Protestants against Catholics rather than the more modern day squaring-off of Judeo-Christians against Muslims. Lastly, a working-class identity exerts itself in conjunction with the rhetoric of upper-class political leaders. As historian Elliott J. Gorn writes, “Appeals to ethnic hatreds allowed men whose livelihoods depended on winning elections to sidestep the more complex and politically dangerous divisions of class.”
...
America fought the Civil War over slavery, and the devastation of that conflict pushed nativist concerns to the back of the American psyche. But nativism never left, and the legacy of the Know Nothings has been apparent in policies aimed at each new wave of immigrants. In 1912, the House Committee on Immigration debated over whether Italians could be considered “full-blooded Caucasians” and immigrants coming from southern and eastern Europe were considered "biologically and culturally less intelligent."
...
Phillips’s conclusion is that those bewildered by current political affairs simply haven’t looked far enough back into history. “One can’t possibly make sense of [current events] unless you know something about nativism,” he says. “That requires you to go back in time to the Know Nothings. You have to realize the context is different, but the themes are consistent. The actors are still the same, but with different names.”

We are not just a nation of immigrants. If we were, the statue of liberty would have [been] done a century earlier and approved by our founding fathers. It is really green bronze crap.

We are not just a nation of immigrants.

There are a few of us who weren't:

But fact is, we are a nation of one wave of immigration after another. It's always been that way, as you can see. Today's xenophobes are just the latest outbreak of the know-nothings. Where nativists were hysterically howling about Germans and Irish and Italians, today, it's Mexicans and Muslims.

The names change, but the stupidity remains the same.

But you won't give us any names. It's that typical tactic you use: Paint whole swaths of society as stupid and evil without saying anything that can be tested.

Give us names or go home.

apparently, somebody is howling about something and barbie's mad about it :idunno:

The article included names. Why not just read it and learn?

You're projecting again. No one said "evil." These are just frightened, stupid people.

For example, in previous waves of immigration, panicked nativists wrongly assumed that Germans, Irish, Jews, and Italians were criminals "with a few good people" being assumed. They were just as wrong as today. In fact, Americans are safer in areas where greater numbers of illegal aliens are found. Would you like me to show you that?

All the paranoid panic about "criminal aliens" is foolish. Illegal aliens are less likely to be violent criminals than native-born Americans.

If you don't know any fools who claim illegal immigrants are a major danger to us, that's fine. If the hood doesn't fit anyone you know, then they don't need to wear it.

On the other hand, if you know of someone who's doing it, then we're just saying it's nothing new. Ignorant and cowardly people have pointlessly panicked over immigrants in every wave of migration. And they are always wrong.

Calm yourself and think instead of reacting.

Stripe's into his manic phase again. It's entertaining, but kind of a distraction for the people who actually want to talk about the issue.

The OP is about the ignorant and cowardly fools who fear immigrants when the evidence shows illegal immigrants are actually less dangerous to the rest of us than are native-born Americans.

As you now realize, such fools appear every time there's a wave of immigration into America. They were just terrified of Irish, Jewish, Italian, German, or other immigrants. And each time they were wrong. Each wave of migration made us stronger and better.

In the coming years, more and more people will laugh about the idiots who worried about Hispanics or Muslims.

Are you trying to resurrect the Know Nothings political party?
From the name alone, it appears to be a good fit for you.

funny, i read Boissoneault's piece and didn't see a single usage of the words "ignorant", "fool" or "idiots"

there was a single occurrence of the word "cowardly", used to describe catholics

appropriate, i suppose, considering the thread originator and his propensity for using insulting language while hiding behind a keyboard :chuckle:

We are not just a nation of immigrants.

or you could say that we all are - even the indians

as for the statue of liberty, it was a gift from france, with an inscription of a poem by the daughter of a wealthy new york city jew - the prototype of today's modern SJW

it was not an enshrined artifact of our founding, on a par with the constitution and bill of rights

Barbarian, regarding people who fear illegal aliens, even though they are less violent than native born Americans:
These are just frightened, stupid people.

you're a jackass

When you get caught, you always get verbally abusive. It's how we know you know you lost.

try telling Mollie Tibbets' parents that they are just frightened, stupid people

You think they were afraid of illegal aliens before she was killed?

Show us that. I think you're making it up.

You suppose if their daughter was killed by a Mormon,( who, like illegal aliens, are less likely to be violent than other people in America) they would have been smart to be afraid of Mormons?

You think the woman who was hit by a meteorite, would have been smart to be afraid of meteorites?

It would be human nature for her to be afraid of meteorites after she was hit by one, but that reaction isn't based on reason.

It's people like you who make Casinos rich. You're a sucker only as long as you fall for stuff like that.

Yeah, the stupidity is either genocide and/or importing slavery when the other group doesn't speak the same language. There is nothing special about the statue of liberty. It was given to us when the US was going poor in a downfall.

Today, Trump might be reading from a script prepared in 1854. The American political establishment was shocked in that year when a new political movement known as the Know Nothings sensationally won a series of local and Congressional elections. Started in secret as the Order of the Star Spangled Banner (it got its memorable moniker from the instruction given members to deny any involvement), the movement had prepared the ground well. Look at your cities, the Know Nothings told voters, with its squalor and drunkenness; look at your falling wages. Who was to blame? The answer was simple. The Know Nothings alleged that immigrants, many of them Irish Catholics, were responsible for an upsurge in crime, particularly sexual and violent crime. And as Catholics who supposedly owed their allegiance to the Pope, the migrants would fundamentally alter the character of the Protestant United States. Sound familiar?
https://www.newstatesman.com/politi...gs-and-fire-eaters-why-donald-trump-man-1850s

Fools were exaggerating crime as a tactic back then, too. Same foolish and fearful people, who turned out to be entirely wrong about the new immigrants.

Many of the people who were hated by nativists back then, have descendants who have fallen into the same sewer as the idiots who hated their ancestors. And so it goes...

I can quarantee all low-skilled workers become documented by the INS. Your graph is about the Canadian side of the border.
