I don't doubt he was ill when he murdered his children. A father or mother would have to be sick to do that. If you prefer, let's not think of the execution as a punishment, but a release from a tortured state of mind. We have enough sense to put down a mad dog. We don't waste energy trying to measure the dog's "responsibility", diminished or not.
If I did something like that, I would want someone to put me down. In fact, when I came to my senses, I may consider doing it myself.
Sad, evil & disturbing stuff out there.
