The Martin Hartwell Story
There was a Canadian Bush Pilot named Martin Hartwell who had immigrated from Germany in 1925.
In November 8, 1972 , he was flying to Yellowknife with a 14 year old boy who had appendicitis.
A nurse was with the boy on this medivac flight because there was no hospital in his smalll native town.
A pregnant woman was also on board and soon to give birth .
They ran into some rough weather and crashed the Airplane,
a Beech-18 in a snow covered deserted area of the Northwest Territories.
At first, Martin Hartwell, the boy and the pregnant woman survived the crash.
The Nurse was dead. The pregnant woman died of her injuries later that night.
Martin Hartwell had two broken legs from the accident and could not move very far or travel for help.
It was -37 C in that wintry desert. They had not much in the way of food rations.
The boy could not eat because of his appendicitis and died soon after.
A search party found him after twenty days.
Martin had survived by eating part of the nurses leg to survive. :chew:
