The hole is to measure portions.
The long strings of dry spaghetti that fit through the hole equals 1 serving portion.

You can get some fancy ones with different size holes to measure portions.

Oh wow. I think I do remember hearing that from the distant past.
Here I was thinking this was one of those fun tests that had no answers. I'll have to be more careful.
