Anyone want to field that one? I've always been in favor of means testing for excess body fat.

There are all sorts of reasons poor people in western countries are often obese.

Primarily, because cheap foods are typically fattening and unhealthy foods.

It also probably has to do with cortisol, and the effect it has on appetite and fat. Cortisol is much more prevalent in low income children.

You, serpentdove and republicanchick should start a comedy show. Just the three of you sitting around barking. You could bring guns and shoot them up in the air as you bark.

Excess body fat = abundant intake of food.

Abundant intake of food =/= poverty.

They are not poor by standards in poor nations. There were people during the 1930s dust bowl, now, that was poor; some died of starvation.

Have you ever heard of welfare commodities? This was when the government gave out sacks of flour and cornmeal, along with cheese and some other staples. The commodities were for the poor, yet these alone provided a healthy diet. The difference was one had to prepare these meals.

True, junk food makes one fat; however, compared to the cost of commodities, junk food is quite expensive. truly, we do not know poor anymore.

Actually packets of ramen noodles are much cheaper than getting/purchasing ingredients to make ANYTHING. Ramen's are only about 25 cents a piece. Cheap yes, healthy? absolutely not. Also many on food stamps work, thus time to create food is thus decreased. Junk food as in ice cream/chips/cookies yes are expensive, but it is much cheaper to buy "bad" foods.

Top Ramen and Ding Dongs....time wasted watching TV and eating chips instead of cooking meals after "work". Not much of a mystery, actually.

Regarding food commodities, there is no argument as to the nutritious value, denying it

Yep...they're much better than food stamps where people are free to buy junk food.

Do you know about the food stamp selling? Yes, there were fools who sold their food stamps at 50 cents on the dollar to buy booze. This foolishness was taken well advantage by those who had more food buying power.

Oh yeah. It's still done with the cards, but it isn't quite as easy. I know some families who get over 800 a month and both parents have jobs. They eat better than I do....steak and lobster, etc.

My knowledge is dated. I know about the actual stamps. Food stamp buyers would stand out front of liquor stores. Hardly do i blame them as much as the fools who sell their stamps. This selling is voluntary, and those buying do take advantage, yet do so for the increase of their sustenance.
