A missing link.

Do you think Americans will ever understand the link between lots of people owning guns and lots of people being shot dead?

Every year in the U.S., an average of more than 100,000 people are shot, according to The Brady Campaign To Prevent Gun Violence.

Every day in the U.S., an average of 289 people are shot. Eighty-six of them die: 30 are murdered, 53 kill themselves, two die accidentally, and one is shot in a police intervention, the Brady Campaign reports.

Between 2000 and 2010, a total of 335,609 people died from guns -- more than the population of St. Louis, Mo. (318,069), Pittsburgh (307,484), Cincinnati, Ohio (296,223), Newark, N.J. (277,540), and Orlando, Fla. (243,195) (sources: CDF, U.S. Census; CDC)

One person is killed by a firearm every 17 minutes, 87 people are killed during an average day, and 609 are killed every week. (source: CDC)

Americans value the right to protect ourselves from those who will kill with or without access to a gun.

Are you suggesting people arm themselves with more dogs?

At the low, low price of just a few thousand suicides and accidental child deaths a year. That's a deal.

How many of those people who committed suicide would simply have found another method to kill themselves?

Not as many. That's the point. Gunshot wounds are more fatal than say... a botched hanging or pill overdose. After a failed attempt, a person is more likely to receive help, and won't have another attempt. Guns make second chances a whole lot less likely.

How many is not "as many"? 1% less? 5% less? 20% less? 50%? :idunno:

Gunshots are more fatal when he person doesn't die? How does that work?

Guns make second chances a whole lot less likely.
Given that half of all suicides in the US are accomplished without a gun that leaves a lot of other options for a person.

US methods of suicide

In the UK, which has much stricter gun control, the most often method of suicide is hanging.

England & Wales methods of suicide

In the US hanging is second behind the use a firearm. if their were stricter gun control in the US how likely would it be that suicide by hanging would shoot up to #1 in the US?

Almost certainly. But there would be fewer suicides. I don't know how many. Wouldn't one less be a good thing?

Wouldn't one fewer kid blowing his own face off with his dad's gun be a good thing?

Never give up your rights to practice idolatry....

Yah Shua said unto him, Thou shalt love Yah Veh Elohim with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

.....and carry a weapon.
Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

This becomes serve your idols and shoot your neighbour.

And you know this how? There could be more suicides. Who knows? As the British suicide statistics I posted previously show, people will find a way to kill themselves even if they don't have an access to a firearm.

People not killing themselves in general would be a good thing.

I don't know, basic reasoning skills? Guns are more likely to finish the job the first time. With other methods, there's at least a chance that the attempting person could be stopped, or brought to the hospital before it's too late.

People not killing themselves in general would be a good thing.

On that we can agree. Let's drink to it.

Suicides would happen with or without guns. As far as accidental deaths of children, guns, like drugs, cleaners, etc. are not toys. The key is training children that guns are for protection and for them, off limits.
