IMPUTATION: A word meaning to attribute something to a person or reckoning something to the account of another.
THE IMPUTATION OF ADAM'S SIN TO THE HUMAN RACE.
The best scripture to describe how Adam's sin was imputed to his decendants is found in Romans 5:12. "Wherefore as by one man sin entered the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned". We have inherited Adam's sinful nature. Adam is our first father and is the federal head and representative of the human race. As Adam goes, so go we. We are sinners without works. We did not become sinners no more than we can become righteous. King David said, "I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me" Psalm 51:5. We are born sinners because of our relationship to Adam.
THE IMPUTATION OF OUR SINS AND THE SINS OF THE WORLD TO CHRIST.
Christ bore our sins in his body. While Jesus was dying on the cross God imputed our sins and the sins of the world to Jesus and put him to death, 1 John 2:2. Isaiah wrote, "But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed" Isaiah 53:5. Peter picked up on what Isaiah had written and wrote, Who his own self bore our sins in his own body on the tree' 1 Peter2:24. Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 5:21, "For he has made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him"
THE IMPUTATION OF CHRIST'S RIGHTEOUSNESS TO THE BELIEVER.
Christians are MADE righteous by the imputed righteousness of Christ. They do not become righteous. They are MADE righteous. All that have come to Christ as repentant sinners by faith in Christ and his Gospel are justified (Made righteous) by the doing and the dying of Jesus. Jesus is the Christians justifier, Romans 3:26. "Abraham believed God and it was counted unto him for righteousness" Romans 4:3. Faith counts for righteousness, not works or religion. This righteousness is to the Christians account. He doesn't have it yet. As long as he is here on this earth in his Adamic body he is a sinner, a saved sinner. Abraham believed in God's promise of a savior and it was imputed to him for righteousness, James 2:23.
THE IMPUTATION OF SIN TO THE NON BELIEVER IN THE JUDGMENT.
In the judgment there will be believers and non believers. There will be those that are "In Christ" and those that are outside of Christ. "We shall all appear before the judgment seat of Christ" 2 Corinthians 5:10. The purpose of this is to separate the believers from the non believers. God's mark of ownership is the Holy Spirit. They are the bought ones that will go off into eternal life. Those who do not have the Holy Spirit are the lost. They will go off to the Great White Thrown judgment where their sins will be imputed back to them and they will be condemned. King David said, "Blessed are they whose sins are forgiven and whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin" Romans 4:7, 8.
