I think God gives human beings a break because of our limited understanding. The angels, who really ought to know better, apparently don't get second chances. At least, that's my take on the situation. I could be in error.

That's a fair conclusion based on scripture.

Another possibility is that Satan has an assigned role in
the cosmic pantheon, that of accuser / prosecutor, and
by extension, tempter. This is scriptural as well.

Yeah, "learned"...

The past tense of "learn", as in "to acquire knowledge"... surely you've heard of it?

In case you're too ignorant to understand, I'm sure you are, I've known how to use messageboard code since well before I came to TOL.

I think I'm gonna have to disagree.

We know that Satan is going to be punished, and if what you say here is true, then Satan is going to be punished for the very things that God is supposed to be making him do. Now, we both know that's not how it is.

On the other hand, if you think Satan might have taken this role upon himself, I might be inclined to agree.

Kinda like Bill Cosby's comments about talking to a crack addict:

"But crack just magnifies my personality!"

"Okay, but what if you're an a_____?"

Yeah, that whole "beast cast into the pit" thing throws a
wrench into it.

Maybe its a case of Satan having the assignment, but getting
too enthusiastic and taking it too far. Like interrogation
officers in Abu Grabe (sp?)

I don't think so. Is that what you believe, or are you just offering it up for consideration?

I do believe that Satan's role is defined and described early
on as tempter and accuser, OT through the Gospels.

You rightly point out that there is a logical disconnect for God
to punish the one whom God appoints to those tasks.

I offer that up for consideration, and solicite other possibilities,
to help resolve this apparent disconnect.
