I have no problem if someone neg reps me because they don't agree with my post or if they think my post is stupid. I've had it done several times. It's not that big a deal. It's not like my TOL reputation affects my everyday reputation.

It doesn't take a genius to figure it out, chrys. If you like what someone says or think they made a good point or think their post is funny, give them a pos rep. If you don't like what someone says or if you think their post is stupid, give them a neg rep. How hard is it for you?

What really concerns me about the rep system is that too often when there is a disagreement instead of explaining why you disagree a negative rep is given.
A negative rep or calling someone an idiot or a moron does not promote constructive discussions.
I have also noticed that all the moderators have a lot of reputation. You must really like each otherís posts.
Moderators can and do set the tone here at TOL and often they are too quick to negative rep and call others idiots, morons, and losers.
Your rep power can be very intimidating to a new member who just wants to speak their mind.
If someone is being rude, then and only then should a negative rep be given. Iím sure we could have an endless argument as to what is rude.

I, for example, think it is rude to come into someone else's house and tell them what their "house rules" should be.

Whenever I leave a rep, be it negative or positive, I try to remember to at least leave my name, if not the reason for the rep. The receiver can always ask me why I gave the rep I did.

Giving reps are behind the scenes. They are not meant to promote constructive discussions.

It took a long time for me to build up the rep I have, chrys. I think that, the whole time we've had the rep system, I've received two or three neg reps. And, the majority of reps I have come from people other than moderators. What does that say about your theory? The only time I've been quick to neg rep someone was when I got Gene Costa. For some reason, I just don't like him much.

Unless someone is whining about neg reps, new members wouldn't know what people were saying in them. Would they?

I think offering an opinion (which is what TOL is about for most) shouldn't be confused with a command. Someone who lacks the authority to alter, except by swaying the consciences of those in authority, cannot rightly be said to be telling you anything, unless by telling you mean merely offering an opinion.

Granted, it would be rude for someone to come into your home and tell me how to run your affairs, but if your house had a sign on it that read 'come on in and discuss things' you would have to expect that everything was at least up for discussion. Since that sign exists in the nature of TOL what chrysostom did wasn't really rude (and in tone didn't seem bent on offering insult) and in fact seemed entirely in keeping with the rules of this great house.

That said, I think Knight was right on this some time back. Rep isn't something to invest yourself in. It's a good way to find allies and see what people are thinking about the quality of your posts, but ultimately nothing more than a popularity poll. It's for fun, chrysostom, so lightening up a little on this count is probably in order. Being accustomed to argument as a serious tool in every instance it took me a while to catch onto that last bit...

Hey Traditio.... in your rep comment you wrote....

You should give Billy Bob his post count back.
When we prune threads EVERYONE'S post counts get reduced. BillyBob's, mine, yours, everyones! We aren't picking on BillyBob or anyone else when we prune threads.

    But what about mine??!!!!!!

You know my posts are the best!! Who cares if it helps TOL when you prune.

How dare you destroy any of my posts just because you have to prune every now and then just so TOL can function better.
They are all important and should always be here at TOL!!! Besides we all know how rich you are!! There's no reason for you to have to do this because it might save you some money. Who cares? Big deal!! You're loaded and we all know it!

I'm an important person around here and my posts should NEVER be messed with. Just who in the world do you think you are?? Some owner of this website??!!
