I'm right in the middle of them both. My mom is a Christian conservative. My dad supported Clinton and I heard him bash W. Bush a few times (which was just plain common sense). My dad is much more of a cynic when it comes to politics. He's probably the first person I heard say that both parties are the same, while my mother is a bleeding heart type who still has faith in the system.

Oddly enough, I've never really had a disagreement with either when it comes to politics. I think that's how I realized I was a moderate/centrist but certainly a cynic. Still, I can't disagree with someone having hope and optimism.

Depends which parent we're talking about :)

My Mother and I are very similar, my Father and I very rarely see eye to eye on issues.

I developed my political views during jimmy carters term and parents were not excited about reagan. Mother thought highly of FDR and father was supportive of whoever the catholic favorite was. I grew more conservative as an adult and parents started agreeing with me more the last 4 years.

I'm an agorist (left wing market anarchy).

Your dad was spot on. Both parties are liberal.

No way. Both of our parties are CONSERVATIVE compared to what most other countries have. They have REAL socialist and communist parties. :p

In fact quite a few people that are angry with Obama think he isn't liberal *enough*. He's more of a corporatist centrist.

I have drifted quite far from my parent's much more conservative values, though I am still anti-abortion. I don't really like either party though democrats seem to be the least bad at current, considering republicans have gone into crazy-ville. I think one of the big problems in the US right now is a corporatist supreme court and BOTH parties coddling corporations. We need to end corporate person hood. Money is not speech.

My father was a "Barry Goldwater' conservative, which means he did not care for William Rusher, yet read "National Review" and liked W. F. Buckley. He might be considered a paleolibertarian? My mother was a traditionalist southern conservative. I would say I am less conservative on economic issues, compared to my father, then my father never thought outside of the nationalist box?

Am I like them politically? Perhaps it would be more fitting to ponder if they would be more like me, today?

And likewise, despite our heated arguments, both my dad and I agree almost across the board on the same general political planks. And we know that the arguments we have about the details are not as important as people listening to us might think.

Even prior to my conversion to Christianity I have always been very conservative (as that is just plain common sense) but I'm thankful that I was raised in a family that placed personal responsibility and high moral standards at a premium.

It's interesting that you say this, Knight. I would describe our parents as leaning a bit more on the liberal side. They were dedicated to the Democratic Party their whole lives and didn't notice how it had drifted toward the Progressive side. I think we've had more influence on their political views than they ever had on us.

Having said that, I think that because they did love us so much and because we had respect for them, we naturally grew up with a love for traditional family values. Of course, you, being the baby of the family, might not have heard as much liberal garbage from them as I did.

I don't think I have ever heard of a "bleeding heart" conservative before.

Generally I would say I agree with my father on the central issues. He was a Republican when I was a child and so was I, but we have both learned the truth about those pseudo-conservatives, who are more con than conservative. I'm not really sure which way my mom leans. She's supportive of homosexuals and "gay rights." But she's proud of me for protesting abortion. She was on welfare after her second divorce, but she worked at the time, as well. And I don't remember her misusing money and overindulging or spoiling us as children.

So I suppose that goes for me as well; Grandpa and I agree on pretty much the broad spectrum of politics. :)

My parents have always been conservative and I have always been moderate with distinct leanings towards liberal. Obama has realigned me much much closer to my parents. I still consider myself to be moderate but I will be voting a much more conservative line this election season.
